Description

We've been loving all the new Varney releases, and this crunchy but smooth-as-silk Grenache continues the happy trend.

Some whole bunch fermentation for structure, some carbonic maceration for bouncy aromatics, and the finished wine is full of vibrant red berries, some mint and spice, and it's a whole lot of fun to imbibe.

Delicious drinking that hits all the right notes.

"Bright scarlet hue; a cedary spice-laden bouquet introduces a rich palate with plum, pomegranate, black cherry and finely-honed tannins all tumbling over each other; the spices will increase as time goes by."
- James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)

Old Bush Vine Grenache of 70+ years sourced from two distinguished sites in the McLaren Vale sub-regions of Blewitt Springs and Seaview. 96 points - "Cold-soaked, part whole bunch, 15-28 days on skins, seven months maturation in used French oak, 200 dozen made. Bright scarlet hue; a cedary spice laden bouquet introduces a rich palate with plum, pomegranate, black cherry and finely-honed tannins all tumbling over each other; the spices will increase as time goes by." - James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)

94 points - "An address ascending. Its GSM, the only one with the prerequisite rivets of savoury tannin, spice and Mediterranean aura in the country. This, its acolyte, is by far the best release of grenache here to date. Mercifully, devoid of eucalyptus. Cherry pie, pomegranate, persimmon, kirsch and a broad slake of star anise, dried thyme and lavender. Alan Varney understands the need for tannin, the pinion of compression and the inherent tension that comes with it, as much as the bulwark against fruit sweetness, something that comes a little too easy in this country. A rather fine wine at a very fair price." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

91 Points - "Premium fruit from Blewitt Springs and Seaview is written all over this wine although it still retains the casual Varney flair. Layers of primary fruit slowly build from black cherry, fruits of the forest and new leather with a touch of stalk and an intriguing hint of dried rose. Good density of flavour follows with weighty tannins (for Grenache) as it gives up dark licorice, meat locker and gently spicy flavours with a distinctly savoury backbone of hot rocks and dusty earth. A bit of structural grip to finish suggests this needs a couple of years to flesh out." - Angus Hughson (Wine Pilot)

Varney Wines

Varney Wines began with just a "tonne for fun" for Alan Varney to play around with over a decade ago.

He took his years of experience working at top South Australian wineries, including time spent at Orlando Wines, Longview Vineyard and over a decade as senior winemaker at d’Arenberg, and poured his skills into crafting a style of wine that he and his friends and family could enjoy.

The side gig became a full-time obsession, leading to Alan purchasing a dilapidated property at the Gateway of McLaren Vale to house a tasting room alongside his wife Kathrin’s restaurant, Victor’s Place. A sustainable modern winery was built and their first commercial release was unveiled. The wines have been taking off ever since culminating with Varney being named James Halliday's Best New Winery in 2021.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
