Description

This beautiful example of McLaren Vale Grenache comes from a rugged old bush vines planted in Blewitt Springs almost 50 years ago.

Delicate handling in the winery by winemaker Michael Corbett has perfectly preserved the ethereal quality that these old vines produce. The epic aromatics, the glorious texture, the vivaciousness of this wine is something to behold.

This is the quintessential modern McLaren Vale Grenache and just a stunning thing to drink. It's set to be one of the most sought-after Grenache releases in Australia this year.

OLD BUSH VINE GRENACHE FARMED ORGANICALLY BY ROBERT RENDE AND VANGUARDIST

VINEYARD AND WINERY
The Grenache used in crafting this wine originates from the magical 'Silver Sands' vineyard in Blewitt Springs, a hidden gem planted over 50 years ago by Robert Rende and his father, Michael. This vintage is the eighth release of this wine and the viticulture is now fully managed by Michael J Corbett.

Mother nature dealt a season with very moderate temperatures, marked by coolness and abundant rainfall during the summer and around harvest time. The cooler season contributed to the wine showing a captivating tension, finesse, elevated acidity, refined tannins, prominent lifted fruits, and distinct minerality.

First pick from this vineyard for 2022 was on March 9th, with subsequent picks on the 13th, 17th, and 23rd. Pressure and tensions were high while assessing the fruit readiness and looming weather forecasts. The duration of the harvest spanned 14 days in entirety, a contrast to the 8-week picking period seen in 2021. However, 2022 yielded around a similar 38HL/Ha, still maintaining close to the 50+ year long-term average.

This release marks a significant milestone, as for the first time, we've extended the wine's release to 24 months—a goal long held and now achieved. The key to this two-year cycle lies in the wine's second winter spent in large format oak (Foudre), followed by bottling at the point when the cellar temperature becomes perfect for bottling. This extended period allows for additional bottle aging before its official release in March 2024.

Limited to just 250 dozen bottles, approximately half the production of the 2021 vintage, this wine stands as a testament to our commitment to quality. Bottled without any fining or filtration.

97 Points - "These wines often have a Nebbiolo-like quality to them (which I love), and no change here. Release is March 2024. Cherry, liquorice root, dried roses, mint, cinnamon and sweet spice; so aromatic and compelling. It’s medium-bodied, distinctly stony and ferrous, with cool acidity, flavour delivered with restraint and lack of overt sweetness, superb length and balance. The fine chalky tannin, the precision – all just so. An outstanding Grenache. Is it the best Australian Grenache? I think maybe so. Superb." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

97 Points - "This producer is hitting a peak of elegance, poise and exquisite detail, meshed with ripeness. The wine was pushed a little toward the greener side in the past in the name of acid, but not now. Old-vine Blewitt Springs fruit gives notes of red cherries, plums, amaro liqueur, pickled orange zest and root spices. This is gorgeous contemporary Aussie grenache, effortlessly rivaling the world's very best. It’s medium-bodied with a sandy scrub of tannin that’s gently rocky. Exceptional. Drink or hold." - Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

A savoury red berry laser beam

This is not plush, but bright red fruits and broth on the finish beneath the felt-like tannins. Very good indeed. Very classy.

This wine is a favourite, absolutely cracking wine. Great intensity of flavour, but not over the top, clean, fresh and moreish.

Vanguardist

Vanguardist is an up and coming producer from McLaren Vale started by three friends after many long nights in Hawkes Bay talking about their shared love of wine.

Their mission is to bring premium, authentic, small-batch wines to a market they see as crowded by "overly commercialised wines produced by corporates who take up all the elbow room."

They source very high-quality fruit from great vineyards across South Australia, looking to build wines with texture and vibrancy.

With experienced winemaker Michael Corbett at the helm, the future looks bright for this plucky challenger brand.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
