Description

The Utzinger Black Label Pinot Noir is a relative newcomer to the premium small-batch wine scene in Tasmania, crafted by Matthias and Lauren Utzinger in the Tamar Valley.

Established in 2018, the Utzinger's vineyard thrives with high-density plantings of Pinot Noir and other varieties, nurtured organically and with deep respect for the environment. Matthias, a Swiss winemaker, brought his extensive experience and dedication to Tasmania, where he meticulously manages the vineyard with a hands-on approach. His ethos of "wine is grown, not made" shines through in this wine.

This Pinot Noir is made from estate-grown Abel, MV6, and Pommard clones. Hand-picked, partially whole-bunch fermented, and basket-pressed into 35% new French oak. Minimal intervention winemaking here yielding a powerful yet precise Pinot Noir which is delicious to its core.

This is the finest Pinot Noir offering from the Utzingers. Limited stocks available.

"Bright ruby with aromas of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberries with hints of citrus blossom, morello cherries, dried citrus peel, soul-like spices, vanilla bean and red berry cream. Ridiculously pure and flowy, gossamer tannins providing the frame, briny acidity the drive. It's a case of clarity of site and fruit purity here, and that is a heady mix indeed. Just a delicious wine."

"A Tasmanian pinot noir that stands out proudly in a lineup. Sous-bois aromas of dried porcini, mulch and bitter-cherry amaro, almost nudging Campari. A beautifully composed, mid-weighted symphony. Apposite fruit concentration, sinuous svelte tannin and saline freshness. A savory pinot noir that strides long and broad. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

Delicious drop from the Tamar Valley

I thought that cracking open a Tamar pinot noir so young might leave me wanting, but this Utzinger did not fail to deliver. The usual dark fruits, typical of Tamar wine, not overly savoury, but enough complexity and depth to make this a beautiful wine to drink. It will probably be a whole lot better in 2027, but it drunk beautifully now and like almost every Tassie pinot noir, it will reward you well with a few years in the bottle (5+ if you can restrain yourself!). It's not life changing, but it's an absolute delight and pretty good value for money at that price point too.

Estate grown fruit, mainly Abel, MV6 and Pommard clones, hand-picked, 17% whole bunch with remaining berries destemmed, cold soak before wild ferment, basket pressed into new (35%) and old French oak barrels, unfined, unfiltered, screwcap.

Medium to intense burgundy red. A broodier interpretation. Tobacco, sour cherry jam, plum, orange peel, warm spice with clear oak influence.

Soft attack, low to medium acid, young tannin structure, relatively high alcohol resulting in fuller bodied wine, long finish.
