Apostolos Thymiopoulos has nailed it again with his 2022 Young Vines Xinomavro—a loveable and endlessly drinkable red that shows off everything we love about northern Greece’s hero grape. Sourced from biodynamically farmed young vines in the cool, mountainous vineyards of Naoussa, this wine is all about freshness, energy, and pure fruit expression.
This Xinomavro spends 8 months in concrete tanks to keep things clean and focused, not an oak barrel in sight. On the nose, it’s bursting with fresh strawberries, cherries, and a dash of wild herbs, with just a hint of spice for good measure. The palate is juicy and medium-bodied, with bright red and black fruits, a touch of savoury grip from gravelly tannins, and a zippy, refreshing finish that leaves you reaching for another glass.

Hearing some hype around this relatively accessible Greek red, it was a must try and it over delivered on the promise.
Comparisons such as "Greek Nebbiolo" are not far fetched. A medium-bodied red, slightly brickish, all this lovely red fruit and rose aroma, maintained lightly on the palate paired with tobacco and leather for days. Tannin feels inescapable drinking in 2025, and can only imagine how the obvious structure of the wine will continue to unwind in the short to medium term.
Have this with lamb and be merry. It's a lovely wine for stunning value, especially as it is often compared to it's cousin across the Adriatic.
