Description

This is Thousand Candles doing what they do best - pinot with presence, but no fuss. Grown on a steep, east-facing slope with rocky subsoils and clay-loam topsoil, the vineyard’s a bit of a gem, and Stuart Proud knows exactly how to get the best from it. Farming is hands-on, thoughtful and organic-leaning, with an eye on keeping everything in balance.

The fruit comes off in small, intensely flavoured parcels, fermented separately with varying whole bunch and whole berry portions. It’s all done gently—no big moves, no heavy extraction - just a light touch to let the vineyard speak clearly. The wine spends three weeks on skins before heading into mostly older French oak.

What you get in the glass is savoury, structured and quietly serious. It’s not loud, but there’s plenty going on - red fruit, spice, earth and those fine, chalky tannins that are starting to become a bit of a signature for this place.

"Red and black fruits, cinnamon, incense and flowers… Balanced palate with depth and chiselled tannins. A structured, long wine that will reward patience."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points
"Red cherry, undergrowth, orange rind and Campari-like herbs… Fresh, complex and energetic, with cedarwood and a rolling, fanning tannin profile. Excellent and complete Pinot with a savoury, nutty edge."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

96 points - "Fermented with 50% whole bunches and aged in new (8%) and older French barriques. A medium ruby red. Harmonious and complex on the nose with its aromas of red and black fruits, freshly grated cinnamon, incense and flowers. Just as well balanced on the palate which has both excellent depth and structure. The tannins are chiselled and long, as is the wine. A little patience will be required, and rewarded." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "This is a bit murky and I like that in a Pinot Noir. It’s a wine built on red cherry and undergrowth flavours but orange rind, Campari-like herbs and sweet spice notes are also key aspects of this wine’s personality. It smells great, basically; fresh, fruity, complex and energetic, with cedarwood characters adding that bit extra. All this could be enough to recommend this wine, possibly, but the way the fruit builds, and more especially the way tannin rolls and fans out through the back half, is where and how the quality elevates. This wine is excellent, and complete with a savoury/nutty/twiggy edge to the aftertaste." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

A steep east facing slope that catches the morning sun. Clay loam soils sit above an ancient rocky subsoil. Free draining soil allows for very balanced vine growth.

Open canopies and smaller bunch size produces wines with fruit density, structure and depth.

We hand pick several parcels of fruit from this site and ferment separately with different whole bunch and whole berry components. Wild yeast, gentle handling no pump overs or plunging. We do this to allow true vineyard expression.

After three weeks on skins the wines are pressed individually into older French barriques.

Raspberry, herbs and a slight earthiness.

A hallmark of this wine is its structure, fine grained yet velvety tannins coat the whole palate seamlessly.
