Description

If you want to understand just how far Orange has come as a Pinot region, pour a glass of this.

Hill Park is the home block for Tom Ward and the team at Swinging Bridge, planted over 20 years ago, and now delivering some of the best fruit in the district. This wine is a selection of the best barrels from the best clones in the vineyard, grown high on the slopes of Mt Canobolas at 900m elevation.

The 2022 vintage was a tricky one, cool and wet right through, but the vineyard work here is on another level. It's gifted Tom a Pinot that’s all bright red fruit and spice, with that lovely lift and energy you only get from properly cool sites. There’s elegance, freshness, a little flint and spice from the oak, and that classic Aussie bushland edge - think raspberry leaf, strawberry gum, and just a hint of eucalyptus. It’s not trying to be Burgundy, it’s just a beautiful expression of high-altitude, NSW Pinot made with ambition.

Swinging Bridge has become a benchmark in the region for Pinot Noir, and this release shows exactly why. A serious wine here with a real regional identity.

"A parade on the senses, the 2022 flagship pinot noir shows up with pomegranate, hibiscus and red raspberry, leading into a charcuterie board of sliced meats. Pink peppercorn-crusted pastrami, wild baby tomatoes and baked clay. The palate weight is sturdy but ethereal with a sour cherry note to the fruit spectrum followed by a density of flavour that continues long after the glass has settled on the table. An interplay between succulent acidity, fine tannins and exquisite cool climate fruit. Marvelous."

95 points - "Medium depth red-purple, bright and translucent. More smoky oak on the nose here, more Mercurey barrels involved—different to the Caldwell Lane. A different bouquet, fivespice, smoked charcuterie, also lovely cherry pinot fruit. In the mouth, it's fuller, richer, rounder than ther previous wine. Still a light to medium bodied pinot noir but more stuffing than ther Caldwell Lane. Similar tannins, not grippy or assertive but present, lingering and adding a pleasant after-grip that would help it partner food. (Abel and 667 clones)" - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

    Better with a little age

2022 SB Hill Park Pinot was nice enough when I first tried a cupla years ago. Recently purchased wine was lush-less angular than its youthful version.

Shout out to Different drop for the pricing too. Attractively lower than a number of competitors.

Our Single Vineyard series showcases a selection of the best barrels from each vintage and is produced in very small quantities, with the goal of encompassing the true essence of that vineyard. Our Hill Park Pinot Noir tells a story of a perfectly suited vineyard for this delicate variety as well as constant attention to detail throughout the vintage. We select the clones that best reflect our position within the Orange region which leads to a wine of outstanding vibrancy and elegant complexity. This wine comes from Blocks 4 and 5 at Hill Park, which is made up of the clones Abel, 667 and 777.

EXPLORE THE VINTAGE

The 2022 vintage began with high rainfall throughout the winter of 2021 and continued until January. This led to some vigorous canopy growth in the early months of spring and summer, requiring extensive leaf plucking, trimming and crop thinning to ensure the crop was properly set up heading toward harvest. The rainfall stopped in mid-January and held off until mid-April, which allowed us to harvest the fruit with optimal ripeness. Below average temperatures in every month of the growing season led to some beautiful cool climate wines.

APPRECIATE THE WINEMAKING

The fruit is destemmed without rollers to maintain as many whole berries as possible. It is then tipped into the open fermentors and cold soaked for 3 days before starting fermentation. It is plunged twice daily and allowed to ferment fairly quickly. It is pressed at the end of ferment with some residual sugar from the whole berries and transferred to barrel to finish fermentation and malolactic conversion. The wine is sulfured at the end of ferment and left in barrel for 8 months. The oak is 20% new, consisting predominantly of puncheons from a variety of tonneliers. The wine is kept separate in its individual clones to the end of fermentation before we select the best barrels to go into our Hill Park Pinot Noir. The clones used for 2022 consist of the Clones 667 and Abel.

Swinging Bridge Wines

Swinging Bridge is one of Orange’s premier producers.

This producer has always served up extremely well-priced, classically styled wines, but recent years has seen the quality and variety go to another level.

Owner/winemaker Tom Ward has a vision for Swinging Bridge to be renowned for its premium Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and for innovation, and they're making great strides.

Their Chardonnay is already as good as any in the region; the Pinot Noir, while early days, is winning trophies and shows great promise, the innovative '# Series' is full of all sorts of deliciously quirky experiments.

An excellent producer and a leader for the future for Orange and NSW wine.
