Description

This concentrated and intense single vineyard Shiraz from S.C. Pannell is named after the original vineyard's owners.

The block on Olivers Road runs from East to West which helps develop fruit ripeness at lower baume/ alcohol levels, and the ironstone soils give structure of the wine.

It's an unadulterated McLaren Vale red with minimum additions and only two months in oak puncheons. The flavours are sweet and savoury, full of dark earth, spice, mulberry fruit and an ironstone, graphitey mouthfeel. There's a good whack of acidity too.

95 points - "A wine for the future. The bright purple colour is impenetrably deep, and there's power plus on the nose. A mélange of crushed black and red fruits, fig syrup, ink, minerally earth, and a thread of vanilla mark the aroma. The full-bodied palate is rich in flavour, essency and sumptuous in feel, yet it's not too jammy or sweet. A dark chocolaty thread carries through big, ripe, layered tannins on the finish. Single-block Shiraz with purity and finesse. Dark fruit coulis, black pepper, and midnight violets unfold into a beautifully balanced, midweight wine with no oak interference – just raw elegance and depth. A McLaren Vale Shiraz, reimagined.

The Vintage: Quality was good due to the long slow ripening period. Reds developed depth of flavour and complex tannins. A vintage to seek out and keep.

Flavour Profile: Inviting dark flavours are the signature of this block. Black fruit coulis ready for ice cream. Dusty spice including black pepper, liquorice and midnight violets. Some shy citrus peel makes itself known on the appetising finish, bringing a beam of light to a dark soul. Midweighted, perfectly balanced, long finish. Once again a Mclaren Vale Shiraz without inhibition, set free from the shackles of Oak and additions.

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate. They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

He is truly one of the most forward-thinking and inspirational Australian winemakers alive today.
