Description

The 2022 Rippon Mature Vine Riesling is a beautifully textured, focused wine that really shows off what mature-vine fruit and patient winemaking can achieve.

Rippon Vineyard, perched on the edge of Lake Wanaka, has been tended by the Mills family for over a century. Now in the hands of fourth-generation winemaker Nick Mills, the vineyard is farmed biodynamically, with a deep respect for the site and its history.

This wine reflects that slow, thoughtful approach, with each bottle offering a genuine taste of this stunning Wanaka vineyard. Spending extended time on skins and lees, this Riesling has depth and complexity, delivering a vibrant yet balanced drop that’s well worth cellaring.

With its fresh acidity and subtle minerality, this has the structure to age and evolve for another decade at least. If you’re looking for a showstopping Riesling with a point of difference, Rippon’s 2022 Mature Vine Riesling is a terrific choice.

"The intensity of flavour here is right up there. There’s a certain softness to the acidity, though the wine’s backbone lacks for nothing, and the way apple, pineapple, lime, mandarin and honey characters pour it on, start to finish, is really something. The finish has a talc-like dryness, the fruit itself a suggestion of sweetness, the wine as a whole as convincing as it is lovely."

"Pale gold. A reductive nose with noticeable sulfides over sunny, ripe stone-fruit and decadent manuka honey. The palate also exhibits some hard edges at this stage - very young and still awkward - but the wine underneath has a gentle and confident power with juicy fruit and a lush texture before the phenolics and reduction close in on the end with astringency. Give it a few years and it should come right: there is enough stuffing and density here to still provide a decade of enjoyment after that."

I could swim in this wine

Luscious and lush. My usual preference for steely slatey rieslings was blown away buy the generous energy of this wine. All who tried it at the table had the same head snapping reaction- hey that’s nice! Lush and thirst quenching, I wish I could swim in it.

A warm & productive summer put plenty of flesh on this wine. The fruit is issued from Rippon’s mature vines, whose root hairs have invaded the schist rock below. Lurking towards the end of the first mouthful is substantial phenolic power and it soon starts to take charge of the wine… and give it its sense of place.

Rippon

Rippon Vineyard is one of the most breathtaking sites in Central Otago.

For over a century the Mills family has farmed this small patch of earth on the banks of Lake Wanaka. Nick Mills is the fourth generation of his family to walk the rows on Rippon. He now farms the site according to biodynamic principles.

The Mills family and Rippon are intrinsically linked. There's a deep connection to the land which Nick translates into their superlative wines.

Pinot Noir, Gamay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer all excel at Rippon. The wines are made with patience and love.

In the wines of Rippon, you can sense everything that is transcendent about terroir-driven winemaking where the story of a place is told through the wines it produces.
