Description

The Cabernet di Renzo is an early-drinking Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Orange, Bathurst, and O’Connell.

Predominantly Cabernet Franc from the Boreelane vineyard, owned by Phillip Shaw, fermented with a small portion of whole bunches and held on skins for about a month before aging in old oak. The Cabernet component comes from Canobolas Wines and Merlot from the Carillion Vineyard, co-fermented with Cabernet Sauvignon from Gordon Hills, managed by Gilbert Family Wines and Nick Lander.

Adding depth to the blend are Cabernet and Merlot from Bella Luna, fermented as whole berries and aged in old oak. This meticulous crafting process highlights the essence of each vineyard, resulting in a harmonious and expressive wine.

Lovely drinking from the talented Sam Renzaglia.

91 points - "Herbaceous perfume with raspberries and green peppercorns, fennel, cranberries and a touch of smoked paprika. It’s quite intense with green and bright red fruit aromas. Tomatoes on the vine, red plums and sour cherries on the palate. Very appealing, medium-bodied red with vibrant perfume. Good chewy aftertaste with medium tannin." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

WINEMAKING NOTES

The 2022 Cabernet di Renzo is a good old fashioned blend of a number of different parcels of grapes from Orange, Bathurst and O’connell. The main constituent is Cabernet Franc from the Boreelane vineyard which is owned by Phillip Shaw these days which we fermented with a small proportion of whole bunches and held on skins for around a month before pressing to old oak. There is also some Cabernet from Canobolas Wines and Merlot which came from the Carillion Vineyard- across the fence from Boreelane which we co fermented with Cabernet Sauvignon from Gordon Hills which is around a kilometre back towards Orange from the other 2 sites and is today owned and managed by Gilbert Family Wines and Nick Lander. After what we thought was going to be nightmare Bordeaux varietal conditions in Orange mid-way through the growing season the weather gods had a change of tact and delivered us a swathe of excellent fruit from these vineyards. The final component in the blend is Cabernet and Merlot from Bella Luna which we fermented as whole berries and matured in old oak. Once all of those components were brought together we bottled the wine without any fining or filtration and light sulphur addition in February 2023.

Renzaglia

In 1982, defying the odds, Guy and Betty Renzaglia planted Illinois' first vines in Alto Pass.

Their son Mark joined the fight, later establishing Bella Luna vineyard in Australia's untouched O'Connell Valley with his wife Sandy. Today, their son Sam carries the torch, expanding Bella Luna while prioritizing a healthy ecosystem.

Through composting, cover crops, and respecting native fauna, they craft exceptional wines while fostering a thriving environment for generations to come.
