Description

Mari Magno is a new expression from Place of Changing Winds, and this first release already makes a strong case for itself. It’s built around fruit from the echalas block (a high-density bush vine planting) and a handful of young vine parcels that didn’t go into the main cuvées. The team gave it an extra year in bottle before release, just to see how it’d play out – and, turns out, that patience paid off.

This is a more relaxed, earlier-drinking Pinot by their standards, but still carries that POCW clarity and structure. It’s perfumed, juicy, and layered, with plenty of savoury edges to keep things interesting. Think bright fruit and a touch of gamey, herbal complexity. Fermentation was wild, farming’s all organic, and the whole thing was made with the same low-intervention approach the estate is known for.

Just 819 bottles made, and it’s unlikely to hang around long. One of those wines that feels thoughtful, but also just easy to drink.

93 points - "Delicious. Great drinking. Fine. A good lead of game meat, sappy cherry, green olive, alpine herbs, just-ripe strawberry and a general sense of softness, balance, resolve with its time in bottle and maturation generally. A silty feel to tannin, but relaxed, the wine generally so; long and luxurious in a casual kind of way. A little greenery here, so expect that, coolness and minty flickers. Enjoyable." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Mari Magno is our new, first level Pinot Noir label. This release, the wine is based on fruit from our ‘echalas’ (bush vine, picketed) block as well as other, neighbouring young vine plots. It has an extra year of aging because we wanted to learn what this would lend a wine from these vines. Now we have the answer: it’s delicious! Expect a bright, juicy wine with layers of sweet fruit and plenty of aromatic complexity from its extra year in the bottle. Going forward, this will be a label that will allow us to experiment and also declassify plots that don’t make it into our top labels.

On the name: Mari Magno, or rough seas, comes from a quote by Lucretius in De Rerum Natura, where the great Roman poet and philosopher describes the pleasure that we might derive from witnessing the struggle of others (what the Germans call “schadenfreude”). Here then, is something beautiful that derived from our struggles at Place of Changing Winds. We invite you to take pleasure in it!

Place of Changing Winds

The Place of Changing Winds vineyard was planted by notable Australian wine importer, journalist, and author, Rob Walters.

Rob had hunted for a special site to plant in the cooler climes of Australia for many years. One day, esteemed grower/winemaker at Bindi, Michael Dhillon, called him and said, "Rob, I've found your vineyard."

The site sits at 500m above sea level in the Macedon Ranges. Rob has farmed it organically from the start. Planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at an incredible average of 15,000 vines per hectare, this is one of the most exciting emerging viticultural projects in the country.

New to the Place of Change of Winds range are wines from Heathcote high country, organically planted in collaboration with Rhone legend Alain Graillot. These delicious Syrahs, and a Marsanne for the first time from the 2019 vintage, were previously under the Graillot Australia label but are now fully vinified at Place of Changing Winds in Macedon.
