Description

The Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Syrah is a beautiful, elegantly styled Shiraz from Victoria’s Bendigo G.I., crafted by Rob Walters.

Sourced from a specific plot on the foothills of Mt. Alexander, this Syrah benefits from pure granite soils and a mild climate. Fermented with 50% whole bunches, it was matured for nearly two years in a mix of 600, 1,500, and 2,000-liter Stockinger casks before bottling in late December 2023.

It smells of violets, dark plums, baking spices, licorice, and stony minerality. On the palate, it is medium-to-full-bodied with flavours of red berries, cranberries and alpine herbs, wrapped in lacy, talc-like tannins and a lightly puckering finish.

Awarded 96 points by the Halliday Wine Companion, this is a beautiful Syrah with finesse, depth and structure.

"What I love about this is its savoury heart and texture – yes, heady aromatics as it’s syrah after all (and 50% whole bunches in the fermentation), so it’s perfumed with violets, dark plums and warm baking spices with wafts of licorice and hot bitumen, stony even. The palate thrills. Full bodied, rich and densely packed with flavour but also grainy tannins. It’s structured and detailed, filling yet never seems weighty."

93 points - "Highly perfumed, red berries, some cranberry zestiness, wild scree and herbs in a pepper-meets-alpine greenery kind of whiff, some aniseed, touch of clove. It sits at medium weight, slinks along all pretty within a web of lacy, talc-like tannin and finishes with lightly puckering dryness. Almost dart-shaped and feels good for it. Flavours match the bouquet, per se. It’s delicious, fine and right." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

This is our second release from Harcourt. It comes from a very specific plot in Victoria’s Bendigo G.I., on the foothills of Mt Alexander (about an hour’s drive north of our cellars). With its pure granite soils and mild climate, we believe Harcourt has one of Australia's most exciting terroirs for Syrah. This fermented with 50% whole bunches, and the wine underwent almost two years’ maturation. The initial period was in older 600- and 1,500-litre Stockinger casks, with the final eight months in 2000-litre Stockinger. It was bottled in late December 2023. It’s a wine that combines lifted perfume and finesse with excellent depth and fine structure.

Place of Changing Winds

The Place of Changing Winds vineyard was planted by notable Australian wine importer, journalist, and author, Rob Walters.

Rob had hunted for a special site to plant in the cooler climes of Australia for many years. One day, esteemed grower/winemaker at Bindi, Michael Dhillon, called him and said, "Rob, I've found your vineyard."

The site sits at 500m above sea level in the Macedon Ranges. Rob has farmed it organically from the start. Planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at an incredible average of 15,000 vines per hectare, this is one of the most exciting emerging viticultural projects in the country.

New to the Place of Change of Winds range are wines from Heathcote high country, organically planted in collaboration with Rhone legend Alain Graillot. These delicious Syrahs, and a Marsanne for the first time from the 2019 vintage, were previously under the Graillot Australia label but are now fully vinified at Place of Changing Winds in Macedon.
