Preservative-free wine in Coonawarra?! Yes... it's a thing...

Well, at least it is at Penley! Kate Goodman is smashing through boundaries all over the place and here's a great case in point. It's Coonawarra Cabernet, with no oak and no sulphur added, making the brightest, juiciest, most playful example of this iconic Australian wine style you could imagine.

The great thing here is that it still scratches that classic Cabernet itch. But it's all about lively blue fruit and supple tannins so it's made for your immediate enjoyment. What a coup for coup-na-warra!

Just 150 dozen made.

"Nailed it. Such energy and unbridled character. Such a joyous expression of Coonawarra Cabernet. Yes."
- 93 pts, Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

"It's a serious cabernet with a fresh, ready-to-go persona."
- 93 pts, Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

Sometimes less is more... Stepping back and letting the vineyard shine louder than the winemaking is a big part of our winemaking style.

Looking at what interventions are necessary, and which we can leave in the cupboard – so to speak. This wine is an extension of that thought process, pushing beyond the comfort zone and safety of sulfur additions.

Many of the little one-percenter improvements at Penley have been about taking things back to old techniques – (using sheep to mow the vineyard, fermenting with whole bunches, etc.) and intervening only as required – but what happens when we take the key intervention of SO2 addition away? What could our Cabernet look like with no preservatives added? Can we still deliver the delicious vibrancy of fruit we see in our glass to you? The answer is yes.

93 points - "No oak, no preservatives, and 30 days on skins. Yet another example of the excellent form this winery is in right now. It's a serious cabernet with a fresh, ready-to-go persona. Blackcurrant, clove and bay leaf flavours bound through the palate before dry, grainy tannin steps in. It's the wine equivalent of a high-quality black-and-white photo: it has that same kind of authentic, detailed, captivating freshness." - Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "Insanely purple colour. My word. Blackberry, liquorice, ginger, clove, and cinnamon spice, some floral notes. It’s deep and fairly bursting with juicy blackcurrant and blackberry flavour, plenty of earthy sooty tannin, spicy dark chocolate, black tea, kind of ferrous too, balanced acidity, with a ripe spiced blueberry finish of excellent length. Nailed it. Such energy and unbridled character. Such a joyous expression of Coonawarra Cabernet. Yes." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Penley is one of the most progressive producers in the Coonawarra region. Born of a historic meeting of Reginald Lester Tolley & Judith Anne Penfold Hyland in 1945, two iconic Australian wine houses were melded under the Penley banner (Pen-folds & Tol-ley).

Today the estate is owned by sisters Ang and Bec Tolley, with the wines made by the gifted Kate Goodman. The sisters' mandate to Kate when she took the top job was simply to make the best wines she possibly could. Kate believes that, "Experimentation is the key to making great wine..." which has produced a fresh modern style of Coonawarra which both honours tradition and promotes innovation.

These wines have lovely balance and poise, they have a brightness and vivaciousness that is outside the norm for the region. Kate is rightly receiving high accolades for her work at Penley, bringing a fresh take to a historic region and reimagining Coonawarra for a new generation of wine lovers.

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
