Description

This is Parker Estate’s bread-and-butter Cabernet – a wine that’s built on the region’s famous terra rossa soils and the kind of attention to detail that’s made them one of the quiet achievers of Coonawarra. The 2022 vintage brings a lovely balance of ripeness and drive, showing just how dialled-in their vineyards are these days.

It’s everything you want in a classic Cab: dark fruit, a bit of graphite, and that trademark Coonawarra freshness keeping it all in check. There’s structure, sure, but it’s not overbearing – the tannins are fine, the oak is subtle, and the whole thing just feels tidy and well put together. It’s a wine that knows exactly what it’s doing.

If you’re into Cabernet with a bit of pedigree and poise, this offers incredible value. It’s a notch up in presence and polish from the Cool Climate release, but still won’t break the bank. A solid addition to the dinner table – or the cellar.

95 points
"Blackberries on the bush, blackcurrants and juniper berries... Oak and saltbush are part of the fabric of the wine. Just splendid."
- Shanteh Wale (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Estate fruit. Maturation in (30% new) oak for 14 months. Blackberries on the bush, blackcurrants and juniper berries. Baked red clay, driftwood and dried bush greens. Bay leaf and caperberry. There is a crackle of dried leaves to the sound this wine gives out. It's as Australian as ’dry as a bone’. Cedar, tea brewing in a billy and all the nostalgia. Oak and saltbush are part of the fabric of the wine. Just splendid." - Shanteh Wale (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "This is right in Coonawarra’s wheelhouse. It was a strong vintage resulting in wines that combine the regional elegance and stylish expression with the power and structure to last. Aromas of distinctly blackcurrant with a slightly earthy violet-like character. The palate is still tightly controlled by fine chalky tannins and fine-grained oak. Just 30% of the oak was new, allowing the palate to achieve balance and poise with great fruit expression." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

This wine lies at the heart of the Parker Estate story. It captures the iconic combination of Cabernet Sauvignon and terra rossa soil in a wine that shows poise, integrity, and consistency year after year.

Viticulture
The Parker Estate ‘Abbey’ vineyard is situated at the southern end of Coonawarra’s renowned terra rossa strip. It is predominantly planted to Reynell Selection Cabernet Sauvignon – original cuttings sourced from Bordeaux. The region benefits from the cooling influence of the Southern Ocean, offering an extended ripening period that enhances fruit expression, depth, and complexity. Terra Rossa is crafted from a small selection of estate-grown fruit parcels.

Winemaking
Small batch parcels were fermented in closed-top fermenters for 13 days, with approximately 10% undergoing extended maceration (30 days) to build flavour and ageing potential. All parcels completed malolactic fermentation in stainless steel, before being transferred to a mix of new (50%), second, third, and fourth fill French oak barrels for 12 months of maturation.
