Barbera but with backbone. This intense and full-flavoured example of this Piedmont classic shows plenty of South Australian power in its delivery.

Description

This is Barbera with a bit more flesh on the bones – still got that trademark acidity, but here it’s wrapped in juicy fruit and soft curves. Grown in the Adelaide Hills and made by Martin Moran at Mordrelle, it leans into the riper, more generous side of the variety without losing its natural lift.

Expect a heap of red fruit, a splash of spice and that zippy line of acidity that keeps it all moving. Tannins are fine and gentle, more suede than grip, making it a great option for those who usually stick to the richer end of the South Aussie red spectrum but want to dip their toes into something a little different.

It’s vibrant, approachable and seriously drinkable – a Barbera that still shows its Italian roots, just with a bit more warmth and generosity.

"Oh my, what a colour – super dark purple with a red overlay – so enticing, as much as the aromas and flavours within. Red cherries, raspberries, a little wild strawberry and all spiced to the max."
- Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

*** Mordrelle’s beautiful labels are created from original artworks painted by Martin Moran's late father, renowned Argentinian artist Jose Luis Moran. The artworks are available for sale through the Mordrelle website.

95 points - "Oh my, what a colour – super dark purple with a red overlay – so enticing, as much as the aromas and flavours within. Red cherries, raspberries, a little wild strawberry and all spiced to the max. Attractive earthy, savoury notes come through and, while this is aged in used oak for 15 months, there are woodsy characters. The palate is plush, the tannins supple and light, while superfine acidity keeps everything in place." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

    Excellent QPR

Barbera with a boost. Great colour, violets on the nose, mid-weight, bright cherry flavours but not sweet - which works for me as a fan of drier reds. A touch a spice. Soft tannins are barely there, longish aftertaste. Better to drink early is my guess - mine won't last long.

    What a wine

Fruit forward , intense violet dark colour.

Showing how much fun wine can be

Made from a single vineyard located in Langhorne Creek, the wine has a deep red-purple colour. Aromas and flavours are intense, displaying vibrant aromas of violets combined with flavours of red mulberries, chocolate and spices with hints of black pepper. Mordrelle

Martin Moran was born and raised in Argentina, where his infatuation with viticulture and winemaking began as his grandfather would walk with him through their family vineyards in Mendoza.

He went on to specialise in viticulture and oenology, and eventually found himself in Australia to work vintages across the Langhorne Creek, Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale regions. It was here that Martin stayed, falling in love with (and marrying) his wife Michelle and embarking on the dream of starting their own boutique label - starting with their first wine, a sparkling created just for their wedding!

They specialise in premium, aged sparkling wines, but you'll find plenty of joy in their reds and whites too.
