Description

Little Yarra is the youngest of Mac’s single-vineyard Chardonnay sites, planted in 2009 down at Gladysdale in the southern end of the Valley. It’s also the earliest to be picked, with warm air drifting through the valley and surrounding forest adding both ripeness and moisture. Clay loam soils here tend to give Chardonnay a rounder feel compared with the tauter, higher sites in the range.

The 2022 season kept yields low thanks to a wet winter and spring, but the fruit that came through carried plenty of depth. Fermentation ran on wild yeasts in old oak, with ten months on lees before bottling – nothing added or taken away.

In the glass it shows a touch more weight than Mac’s other Chardonnays. Stone fruit and citrus are supported by hints of honey, nut and flint, the palate supple yet still cut with acidity. There’s length and balance, but also an openness that makes it easy to enjoy now. A few years in the cellar will no doubt add more layers.

From a vineyard planted in Gladysdale in '09. Matured in seasoned barriques. Bright gold with green tinges. A restrained, nutty and complex bouquet of stone fruits, confit lemon, acacia honey and oyster shell scents. Mineral, detailed and very long on the structured and persistent finish.

This has quite a bit of waxiness, some light, sizzled butter characters, tinned corn, but a faint thing in and amongst green pear, nectarine, coconut apricots (a gentle suggestion). It sits with a touch more richness than expected in the palate, a little softer and broader too, but still, by degrees in the scheme of Mac Forbes tension and energy. Pleasing.

Mac Forbes

If you love premium and artisanal Australian wine, Mac Forbes is a name you need to know. He’s not only one of the country’s most talented winemakers, but he’s one of the most influential spokesmen for promoting the concept of Australian ‘terroir’, believing that wine should represent a time and a place.

Mac specialises in single vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Cabernet from the Yarra Valley. His wines are delicate and finely etched, characterised by subtlety and grace.

His Pinot Noirs are fine-boned, the Chardonnays are adored by lovers of fruit purity rather than winemaking artifice, and his array of off-dry Rieslings from the Strathbogie Ranges are among the country's most interesting. Additionally, his ever-expanding range of experimental wines is a treasure trove for the curious drinker.
