Description

This is arguably Australia's most iconic Chardonnay. For decades, this Margaret River legend has been in a league of its own - a Grand Cru of the Southern Hemisphere, capable of standing alongside the world’s finest white wines. The 2022 release continues that legacy, delivering power, complexity, and seamless balance.

The fruit is hand-harvested, cooled, and partially whole-bunch pressed before undergoing 100% barrel fermentation in new French oak. Regular lees stirring builds texture and depth, and after 11 months in barrel, the wine is blended and bottled without compromise.

The nose is intense and layered - nashi pear, finger lime, and lemon curd, lifted by white florals, brioche, and sesame praline. The palate is pure and precise, unfolding with waves of nectarine, white peach, and citrus zest, laced with graphite minerality, gentle spice, and a fine chalky finish. The acidity is vibrant yet refined, giving the wine tension, length, and serious ageing potential.

A benchmark Australian Chardonnay that needs no introduction - drink now or watch it evolve over the next 15+ years.

95 points
"Pear, grapefruit, Teddy Bear biscuits, cedar, vanilla, clove and ginger oak laying it on pretty thick, though the fruit power is there to take it. It’s juicy, honey drizzled pear, citrus, a firm chalk dust grip, with a lively grapefruit cut of acidity, some lime and lime rind richness here too, with a bold and savoury finish of excellent length. It’s wine of power and presence."

"Toasted nuts, yellow fruits, and exotic spices with a seamless oak integration. Powerful and statuesque, this Chardonnay is one to collect, though decanting is recommended for immediate enjoyment."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

97 points - "The 2022 season was warm and low-yielding, particularly for Chardonnay, and many of the wines produced in the region this season can be typified by their nuttiness and a distinct chamomile tea/white flower character. Here, the 2022 Art Series Chardonnay is showing both of those characters, neatly wedged into the authoritative profile of Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay. Today, for perhaps the first time ever in seeing these wines on release, I note that the oak is a key player in the drinking experience—as ever, seamlessly matched to the fruit and an important part of the wine's style and evident here today. There are toasted nuts, yellow fruits, exotic spices and an open fan of acidity/phenolics through the finish. This 2022 will prove to be a powerful and statuesque player in the wider footprint of Art Series Chardonnays. It's one to collect, but for drinking in the short/immediate term, decanting is recommended." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

95 points - "Light, bright yellow in the glass, polished and limpid. The bouquet shows nougat and quite strong oak in the form of sliced almond and raw hazelnut characters, while the palate has power and concentration to burn. This has the depth of flavour, intensity and length to age well, indeed it needs more time for the oak to fully integrate. Will surely build complexity in time. If opened now, it could benefit from a splashy decant." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay is a yearly Christmas gift

THE YEAR

2022 provided a fantastic vintage at Leeuwin Estate. Spring of 2021 was typically wet and windy. September and October’s temperatures were milder than usual, delaying shoot growth and flowering dates. Sunny conditions in early to mid-November produced a surge in vine growth and a rapid period of vine flowering. Conditions were warm throughout January and February, with the welcome arrival of the sea breeze a daily constant.

There was a substantial showing of Marri blossom around the vineyard and on the capes, so local birds showed little interest in the ripening grapes. Harvest commenced on February 4 with Pinot Noir, followed by the harvest of all whites by March 15.

TASTING NOTES

Concentrated and intense, the nose is surrounded by a fruit core of nashi pear, finger limes, and Lisbon lemon. Delicate complex layers of nougat, brioche, chamomile, galangal, sesame praline, and macadamia can be unearthed within. Heightened notes of wattle blossom, jasmine, and lime flowers breathe energy and elevation.

The palate is detailed and ethereal. Pear greets nectarine, white peach, and lemon curd. Woven and harmonious, it unfolds to a graphite and mineral thread, with a touch of sherbet, aniseed, and cardamom. Gentle textures open through the mid-palate with vibrant natural acidity, amidst a black tea, talc, and chalk-like finish.

VINIFICATION

Hand-harvested fruit was cooled and destemmed before being held on skins and combined with components of whole-bunch pressed parcels. The juice was settled for 12-36 hours, racked, and inoculated with yeast. 100% of the juice was barrel fermented in new French oak barriques, and the lees stirred regularly. After 11 months in barrels, the various components were blended, fined, stabilized, and bottled.

Leeuwin Estate

What was once a humble cattle farm in Margaret River has now become one of the most iconic wine producing estates in Australia.

A special site identified by iconic Napa Valley winemaker, Robert Mondavi in 1972, Denis and Tricia Horgan took his advise and planted vineyards with the dream of becoming a world-class producer of premium wine.

Leeuwin Estate's first commercial release was in 1979. Now family owned for two generations, theirs is one of the brightest stars in Australian wine. Their iconic Art Series range is now one of the most collectable in the country.

They are celebrated around the world as one of the finest producers of Chardonnay in particular to be found anywhere on the planet.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
