Description

This is one of the most fascinating wines you might ever see out of Australia.

The L.A.S. Vino Vermentino is a wine made for the ocean, by the ocean quite literally.

Hand-picked Vermentino grapes were submerged in water from the Indian ocean in an effort to conduct an experiment on two fronts:

1.) Would the saltwater impact on the final taste of the wine.

2.) Does salt water have similar properties as sulphur dioxide in the preservation of grapes and juice from oxidisation.

Here you can read the full results of this fascinating excursion into the outter boundaries of winemaking experimentation. Suffice to say, the finished wine is incredibly delicious, carrying with it a whisper of seas-spray and brine, making it the ultimate wine to enjoy with a fresh plate of calamari, preferably watching the sun go down on the ocean in Western Australia.

93 points (#1 of 19 Vermentino in Australia) - "Light yellow/straw with a little haziness, smoky burnt matchstick aromas, the palate savoury and flavoursome, rich and minerally, with a saline edginess that is a contrast to fruitiness. There is richness and textural charm as well as lightness of being: a really fascinating dry white wine. And delicious. (Grapes immersed in sea water before processing. Unfiltered). - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

'Marea'

‘Marea’ means tide in Italian and to our knowledge this is the first wine in Australia whose hand-picked grapes were immersed into ocean water following techniques used by the Ancient Greeks. The idea was sparked by the encounter of two Italian girls (Maria & Teresa) who met working at L.A.S. Vino and had a dream to create a wine that reflects the beauty of the ocean surrounding Margaret River.

Marea represents the meeting point between nature and the human hand. Between the traditions of the old world and the dynamism of the new. Between the land, the air and the sea.

L.A.S. Vino

Nic Peterkin’s blood runs red with Margaret River wine.

The son of Pierro founder, Dr Mike Peterkin and Shelly Cullen, of you guessed it, Cullen wines fame, the force is strong with this one. His wines are out there, challenging the status quo of one of the country’s most respected wine-producing regions. This is the “New Guard” of Margaret River, and the wines are coming out all guns blazing.

Nic is playing with some varieties off the beaten path of classic Margaret River. The Chardonnays and Chenin Blancs are stellar, as is the Cabernet but the likes of Touriga Nacional and Sousao all find a home amongst his eye-catching range.

There's some serious substance to his project, being named as the 2016 Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year for his eclectic and tantalising releases and recently named the Dark Horse of the Year at the 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Awards. Nic is one of the most creative and boundary-pushing winemakers in the country, without question. His Margaret River range is truly unlike anything else you will find in Australia.
