Description

Koerner has spent the last decade completely reshaping how we look at the Clare Valley. Instead of heavy-handed extraction and oak clout, Damon Koerner shoots for freshness and drinkability without sacrificing structural integrity. His Classic Red is a clear nod to the legendary red soil Cabernets of iconic neighbours like Wendouree, but reimagined with a lighter, modern touch.

Sourced from the Vivian Vineyard in Watervale, this sits on classic terra rossa clay over limestone. The bulk of the blend is 1998-planted Cabernet Sauvignon, spiced up with a tiny splash of Sciacarello to bring a bright, crunchy lift. Fermented on skins in open-top steel tanks and matured in thick-staved French oak demi-muids, it gets extended bottle age at the winery so it arrives with its elbows neatly tucked in.

Expect dark cassis, purple blossoms and an earthy graphite grip underneath. The palate hits with real structural drive, framed by fine-grained, chalky tannins and a cool mineral vein that keeps the fruit running straight down the line. We reckon this is on par with his best releases yet.

"It feels like a future icon and evokes a thought to visit your butcher, call your mate, get the steaks on a plate and decant this wine ceremoniously."
- Katrina Butler (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "This is cabernet sauvignon off heavier soils from the Vivian vineyard with a barely there addition (2%) of sciacarello. Blackcurrant, blackberry, some fennel and anise, a hint of cherry cola, bresaola and a savoury tobacco tar element that exists beyond the perimeter of fruit. Stately and firm, it flexes its structural boundary to let the light of radiant acidity beam through. It feels like a future icon and evokes a thought to visit your butcher, call your mate, get the steaks on a plate and decant this wine ceremoniously." - Katrina Butler (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "A blend of cabernet sauvignon and (2%) sciacarello. The 1%ers maker the difference. This bottle says Classico but it is now just a plain old Classic, no ‘O’. This is outstanding. It does potent yet svelte cabernet while dialing in a bit of superstar x-factor. Cassis, black olive, clove and cedar gently laid in, game meat, curiously. blood orange, wild herbs and amaro too. Quite a bit of density and richness but then so very, very fresh. Succulent texture, a refreshment factor, but satisfying richness too. A wine for all. And classy. And Classic, it seems. Yes, thanks." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

94 points - "Savory and fruit-driven aromas of wild blackberries, mulberry bush and red currants. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of mocha, olive brine and graphite. Very drying and structured with an underlying freshness. Excellent. Drink or hold." - James Suckling

94 points - "A dash of 2% of the Italian grape sciacarello is added to cabernet sauvignon for “freshness,” according to the maker. The grape is known for its spiciness which also seems to work well here, lifting the black-fruited intensity of the cabernet fruit and ringing it in some delightful floral aromatics. There’s a lovely, youthful vibrancy to this three-year-old with its striking cassis and blood plum and dark cherry fruits, violet, leaf, briar and lively spice. Glossy and smooth, it combines a fine tannin line with a brightness in acidity that lifts the palate. Juicy and ripe and mighty enjoyable right now, but further patience will be rewarded." - South Australian Wine Guide

Planted in 1998, this block of Cabernet Sauvignon in our Vivian vineyard sits just above the Sangiovese. The soil is classic terra rosa soil with red clay over limestone. Cabernet Malbec was the first red wine released under the Koerner brand, back in 2014. Inspired by the great Cabernet and Cabernet Malbec blends of Wendouree. Our style has been refined over the years and today it is predominately Cabernet Sauvignon, with a dash of Scaicarello for freshness. This block always produces small berries, intensely flavoured fruit with great tannin. While still a medium bodied wine, this is the most full-flavoured red we produce. The wine spent around 2 weeks on skins, was hand plunged and then matured for 18 months in thick staved French Demi Muids. It then spent 3 months in stainless steel before bottling in December 2023, with 60ppm total SO2 added and no fining or filtration. The wine has been bottle aged for 18 months before release in July 2025. Koerner

Growing up in Clare Valley, Damon Koerner developed a deep connection with the region's rich wine history. In 2014, he and his brother Jono launched Koerner Wines to bring fresh energy to their home turf, creating vibrant, modern wines that feel both distinctly Clare and cutting-edge.

Koerner Wines is all about blending tradition with innovation. Damon’s organically-minded approach and contemporary techniques – like fermenting and ageing in clay amphora – result in wines that are bright, food-friendly, and ideally suited to Australia’s climate.

Using his family’s Gullyview vineyard alongside nearby plots, Damon works with Clare Valley classics like Riesling and Cabernet, while also embracing more unique varieties like Carignan, Sciacarello, and top-notch Vermentino. His wines showcase Clare Valley’s diversity, revealing unexpected sides of this iconic region. With a recent expansion into the Adelaide Hills, the range continues to grow and mature.

As one of Australia’s most celebrated young winemakers, Damon Koerner is redefining what Clare Valley & Adelaide Hills wines can be. If you haven’t tried Koerner Wines yet, it’s high time to explore these excellent South Australian vinos.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
