Description

The Greenock Shiraz is classic Kalleske - deep, dark and proudly Barossan, but with the kind of polish and care you get from a family that’s been farming the same land for over 150 years. It comes from a single vineyard on their certified organic and biodynamic estate in Greenock, using cuttings that trace back to vines planted in the late 1800s.

The 2022 vintage marked 21 years since Kalleske’s first official vintage, and this release feels like a celebration. It’s generous and structured without being over the top. There’s plenty of dark fruit, a good hit of spice, and a firm, earthy backbone from 14 months in both French and American oak. Everything here is done on site - grown, made, matured - by the Kalleske family, and you can taste the continuity.

It’s a rich, layered Shiraz that hits all the right notes for fans of serious Barossa reds, but it’s also composed and balanced enough to go the distance.

"Vivid colour and vibrant freshness… Clean tilled soil, raspberry, redcurrant, wild sage, blackberry, and a funky vineyard-floor edge… Earthy vitality, plump palate, and rich plummy persistence. Drink 2024–2040."

95 points - "Shiraz sourced from a single vineyard on the western edge of Greenock Creek; destemmed and matured in French and American oak for 14 months. Them Kalleske lads know their way around the Western Barossa, I guess 150 years of continual family ownership of their farm does that. Classic Western Barossa fruit density and flow, studded with fine, ironstone tannins, baking spices, pure macerated plum and summer berry fruits and earth, finishing long and true to its plot of sandy loam, red clay and limestone. Lovely." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Such vivid colour always screams freshness – and provides compelling advertisement for this longstanding biodynamic vineyard – but the bouquet suggests something larger than expected, with clean tilled soil over raspberry and redcurrant, wild sage and funky dank vineyard floor atop vibrant blackberry and blackcurrant. This wine is alive with earthy vitality, plus a rather bouncy, plump palate and the persistence of rich, plummy flavours. Where such fruit purity goes in the cellar, aided by the benefits of sound tannin and acid support, will be an intriguing journey to follow. Drink 2024–2040." - Decanter

Greenock Shiraz is a single vineyard wine produced from low yielding Shiraz vines on the Kalleske estate at Greenock, in the North-Western Barossa Valley. Cuttings for these vines originate from a vineyard planted on the property in the late 1800s.

Today, sixth and seventh generation family members meticulously tend the vines. Traditional winemaking and maturation in American and French oak hogsheads has ensured a complex, full-bodied Shiraz which will reward long term cellaring. Greenock Shiraz is a true family estate wine – grown, vintaged and matured on the Kalleske estate.

Together with Old Vine Grenache, the 2022 vintage celebrates the 21st birthday of Greenock! Both wines were made in our inaugural Kalleske crush, 2002. This 2022 Greenock Shiraz is a terrific wine and fitting release for 21 years of age. The 2022 growing season began with a wet Winter, followed by a cool Spring, then a mild and dry Summer and concluded with a typical Autumn of sunny days in the perfect mid-20s resulting in steady even ripening. The 2022 Greenock is deep and structured with solid dark fruits and is a noble follow on to the previous 20.
