Description

Kaesler’s Old Vine Shiraz is a Barossa classic - big, bold and built from some of the region’s oldest plantings. The vines are all 40+ years old, with some well over 100, giving naturally low yields and concentrated fruit. It’s everything you’d expect from proper old vine Shiraz.

The 2022 vintage delivers on that promise - dense black fruit, warm spice, and that plush, velvety texture that comes from both vine age and time in oak. It’s matured in a mix of French and American barrels, giving it plenty of depth but without going overboard.

This is a wine that knows what it is. No tricks, no trend-chasing - just a full-bodied, finely built Barossa red with serious staying power. Classic stuff, done right.

"Red fruit on the outside, concentrated black fruit on the inside... cherry blossom, hazelnut oak, rose petal, and earthy iodine tannins create an ethereal, umami-rich wine."
- Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

"Dark and red plum fruits, creamy oak, spice and dark chocolate... elegant flow and fine, sandy tannins finishing long and savoury."
- Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Chocolate and plummy black fruits, fine bony tannins and charry oak... a most refined example of Barossa Shiraz."
- Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

"Satsuma plum, blackberry, cocoa powder and dried herbs... dark fruited and firm with grainy tannins and vibrant acidity."
- Aaron Brasher (The Real Review)

96 points - "Richness and lifted aromas define this wine. It’s built with red fruit on the outside and a concentrated line of black fruit on the inside. The perfume holds the tension of cherry blossom, hazelnut oak and rose petal potpourri. The flavour is luscious but carries the same lift of red fruit as the aroma. The tannins are tense and spiked with iodine, that kind of earthy, salty nuance, balancing between dried fruit and dried blood. There’s something very pretty but a bit rusty about this wine, giving ethereal and umami at the same time and this combination is hard to resist." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Bright crimson in the glass with a fair lick of creamy French oak leading the aromatic charge, bright, dark and red plum fruits lie below, sheathed in fine spice and hints of roasting meats, Christmas cake, dark chocolate and violet top notes. There's an elegant flow to the palate here. Fine of structure with the fruit stretched tautly over the frame of fine, sandy tannin and bright acidity, finishing long and savoury with some nice toothsome chew to its form." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Sourced from estate vineyards planted in the sixties. And oh, how they deliver with their smooth, succulent and lavish fruit. The colour is bright red and slightly purple. Aromas of chocolate and plummy black fruits supplemented by some slightly charry oak. The palate is seamlessly structured, with the fine, bony, chalky tannins contributing structure and texture. A most refined example of Barossa Shiraz." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

94 points - "Robust aromas of blood plums, dark cherries, licorice, blueberries and sweet spices. The palate is full-bodied with a creamy texture, firmly framed tannins and bright acidity. A lot to like, with a supple and refined finish. Drink or hold." - JamesSuckling.com

93 points - "Bright red and youthful in the glass. Lifted aromas of satsuma plum, blackberry, dried herbs, violets, earth, cocoa powder and bramble. Fleshy, dark fruited, firm and layered. Plum, dark cherry, sweet spice and briar. The tannins are grainy and firm and the acidity delivers plenty of ping and snap." - Aaron Brasher (The Real Review)

A blend of three incredible Kaesler estate “old” estate grown vineyards located around the winery. This wine was matured in a combination of new and season French Oak Puncheons for 16 months. The Old Vine Shiraz is elegant, balanced, and complex; the hallmarks of Kaesler Shiraz, with rich, black fruits and delicate tannins.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS
Winter rainfall for 2021 was 48% above average. The wet winter was welcomed after 3 dry years. Maximum temperatures were below average for the beginning of the growing season; however, the latter half was warmer providing good ripening conditions. A hailstorm on the 28th of October severely damaged some vines, fortunately most recovered and secondary shoots grew however, they were typically less fruitful than primary shoots which resulted in lower yields in some varieties.

WINEMAKING
Coming from Three vineyards of our favorite of Kaesler Old vine and Barringtons old vines, all fruit is hand harvested in-order to be sure we only get the best of the bunches, with no shriveled or sunburnt berries. Fermentation typically lasts 8 to 10 days, and the pump over routine will change daily to be sure we are not over working the ferment. at pressing the free run is taken off and the skins are lightly pressed in order to keep the tannins soft. After two days of settling, the wine is then racked to French puncheons. Time in barrel will be determined by the wine, this year it was 16 months duration.

APPEARANCE: Ruby red, purple.
BOUQUET: Cherry, black fruits and spice.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
