Description

John Duval’s take on Grenache has always been quietly impressive, but the Annexus takes things to another level. Made only in standout vintages, this is a small-volume wine from seriously old vines - some planted over 160 years ago in Eden Valley’s Stonegarden vineyard. The fruit is exceptional, and Duval’s light hand in the winery lets it speak clearly.

The 2022 season was cool and even, which helped the fruit ripen slowly and evenly, preserving perfume and freshness. Fermented in small open-top fermenters, with a bit of whole bunch for lift and savoury edge, then aged in seasoned oak to keep the focus on fruit and structure. It’s fine, quietly complex Grenache - far from the jammy end of the spectrum - and all the better for it.

Only 300 cases were made, so it’s not going to hang around for long. This is the kind of Barossa Grenache that shows just how graceful and detailed the variety can be in the right hands.

"Red cherry, red plum and raspberry with transitory tones of exotic spice, pressed wildflowers, and gentle wood spice… Harmonious and complex with a gorgeous red fruit profile and a savoury finish that glides away slowly."

"Understated meaty and spicy aromas with a dark cherry undertone… Fabulous focus and energy in a seamless and understated package… Exceptional density of fruit that drives a long, seamless finish."
- Angus Hughson (Vinous)

95+ points
"Dried mint, raspberry pip, star anise and pomegranate molasses… Elegant and detailed; it flows seamlessly across the palate and speaks of chinotto and blood orange."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

96 points - "The Stonegarten vineyard, just out of Springton in Eden Valley, is a sought-after source of grenache for some of the region's best producers, the 160+ year old, well-farmed vines are quite a drawcard. The aromatic profile is subtle, filigreed. Red cherry, red plum and raspberry with transitory tones of exotic spice, pressed wildflowers, gingerbread, red licorice, stone, subdued cola and gentle wood spice that flit in and out of view. Harmonious and complex with a gorgeous red fruit profile, layers of spice and a savoury finish that glides away slowly. Lovely." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "The beautifully poised 2022 Grenache Annexus from the Eden Valley is shy right now but will be something special given the time. Right now, it delivers understated meaty and spicy aromas with a dark cherry undertow and oak nicely couched in behind. Fabulous focus and energy follow in a seamless and understated package yet this shows exceptional density of fruit of focus that drives a long, seamless finish." - Angus Hughson (Vinous)

95+ points - "The 2022 Annexus Grenache is lighter in the glass than the 2021 tasted beside it, and yet aromatically, it offers dried mint and raspberry pip, star anise and fennel, strawberry and pomegranate molasses. On the palate, the wine is elegant and detailed; it flows seamlessly across the palate and speaks of chinotto and blood orange. The fruit is fully destemmed prior to fermentation. The Stonegarden Vineyard was planted in 1858 and is a remarkable site in the Eden Valley. Perhaps this 2022 is slightly more modern in its framing than the 2021 tastes beside it. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

Background
While Shiraz may have played a leading role in John Duval’s winemaking career, he has long admired the unique qualities of Barossa Grenache. Thanks to long-standing relationships with local grape-growing families, we are able to source Grenache from a priceless resource of old vineyards for our Plexus red blend. In the finest vintages, select parcels of exceptional Grenache are reserved for Annexus Grenache—a wine that showcases the very best fruit from an outstanding vintage, sourced from ancient Barossa vines.

Vintage
The 2022 vintage was set up beautifully, with excellent soil moisture carried over from the mild 2021 season. An October hail event reduced yields in some vineyards, though most escaped significant damage. La Niña weather patterns delivered mild harvest conditions once again, supporting even flavour development and vibrant aromatics and acidity. A standout season.

Vineyard
This Grenache was sourced exclusively from a low-yielding ancestor vineyard over 150 years old in Eden Valley.

Winemaking
Fermentation took place in small open-top fermenters, incorporating a small proportion of whole bunches to highlight Grenache’s savoury character. The wine was then matured for 14 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads. Only 300 cases were produced.

Winemaker’s Notes
Nose: Bright and juicy red cherry, raspberry, and floral top notes with a core of savoury spice and earthy nuances.

Palate: Generous layers of elegant red fruits, earthy spice, and round, juicy tannins.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
