Description

The Peake is Hickinbotham’s crown jewel - an elite blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that showcases the full power and pedigree of this remarkable Clarendon site.

Crafted by winemakers Chris Carpenter (of Napa Cabernet fame) and Peter Fraser (of Yangarra and Shiraz renown), this is a flagship red that honours the legacy of great Australian Cab/Shiraz blends, while adding a distinctly modern polish. The fruit is hand-picked and handled separately, matured in a thoughtful mix of Bordeaux barriques, French puncheons and large format foudre before being blended for harmony and finesse.

The 2022 vintage brings brooding dark fruit, cassis, black cherry and plum, layered with graphite, dried herbs, cocoa and spice. The palate is powerful yet supple—silken tannins, flowing structure, and a fresh acid line keep things poised and long.

It’s an immaculately balanced, age-worthy wine that stands confidently among Australia’s great red blends. Drink now with a good decant, or cellar for the long haul. This one’s built to impress.

"Superb melding of shiraz and cabernet... seamless intertwining... seasoned with ground coffee, clove, allspice... builds impressively with air."

"Rhubarb, mulberry, red figs... blackberries, thyme, coffee spice... beautifully poised and nostalgic claret style."

97 points - “52/48% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz from 1971 contour-planted vines; cabernet matured for 15 months in Bordeaux barriques, the shiraz in one- to two-year-old French and Austrian puncheons for eight months, then 10 months in a French oak foudre. The classic Australian blend rendered by the twin powers of winemakers Peter Fraser and Chris Carpenter, with shiraz and cabernet respectively. Named after John Peake, who established the first vineyard in Clarendon, and is also fittingly the peak of the range. The melding of the two varieties here is superb, a seamless intertwining, with shiraz gently flexing and cabernet calmly tensioning. A sophisticated note of oak seasons with ground coffee, clove and allspice over black and blue fruits, the wine building impressively with air. Excellent.” - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - “51% Cabernet Sauvignon 49% Shiraz. Handpicked, destemmed and fermented separately and basket pressed. 17 days on skins for the Cabernet Sauvignon and matured for 15 months in Bordeaux barriques. 20 days on skins for Shiraz and barrelled down to 1-2 year old seasoned French and Austrian oak puncheons for 8 months with additional 10 months in seasoned foudre. The very finest parcels were selected and bottled. A rigorous winemaking explanation and deservedly as everything is meticulously weighted in both the vineyard and winemaking for Hickinbotham. Two worlds meet here and I’m not talking about Australia and the USA. It’s a wine that evokes both our past and future. Nostalgia is plucked from deep within with the kinship of the two varieties. Rhubarb, mulberry and red figs with an outline of blackberries and thyme. The beauty of the site plays an integral part too, providing depth and intensity of fruit and savoury coffee spice. This is a Claret that pays homage to days of old but made with oak consciousness and poise of tomorrow. The rapport between Cabernet and Shiraz is firmly established here and in drinking it, you’ll find any disagreeable thoughts put to rest, or at least till after you are done enjoying it. A truly beautiful wine. Drink now or in 10–12 years preferably with lamb backstrap with a pepper berry crust.” - Shanteh Wale (Wine Pilot)

95 points - “The stunning 2022 Cabernet Shiraz The Peake shows exceptional clarity of fruit, delicacy and detail. It opens with wafts of violet and rubbed sage over a generous core of pure blueberry. Exquisite balance is the key to the 2022, with ample flavor and a rich core of fine yet firm tannins singing over a long, sustained finish. This whispers rather than shouts and is all the better for it.” - Angus Hughson (Vinous)

94 points - “A full-bodied cabernet of precision and class. The results are more approachable, fragrant and exquisite than warmer years. Perhaps the tannins are not quite as refined and resolved. Yet the pimento lift to the aromas riffs on spruce, a smattering of garden herbs, green olive brine, red currants and pickled cherries. It has an immediacy and great gusto. I’d drink this across a shorter-term window. Drink now or hold. Screw cap.” - Ned Goodwin (jamessuckling.com)

    Amazing

Rich and flavoursome - young but smooth and with a few hours decanting perfectly drinkable already. Really will sing after a while in the cellar.

Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard covers a steep cut of country from the ridgetops above the village of Clarendon to the Onkaparinga River in the gorge below. Since its establishment in 1971, the Hickinbotham Vineyard has become a part of Australia’s wine heritage, supplying fruit to produce many of Australia’s greatest wines. Breathing new life into this historic vineyard, winemakers Chris Carpenter and Peter Fraser are forging a new era of Hickinbotham’s prestigious legacy: building upon and honouring the vineyard’s acclaimed pedigree.

The two varieties were hand-picked, destemmed and fermented separately, then gently basket pressed. The Cabernet on skins for 17 days and Shiraz 20 days. The Cabernet Sauvignon matured for 15 months in fine-grained Bordeaux barriques. The Shiraz is barrelled down to 1-2 year old French and Austrian oak puncheons for 8 months before a further 10 months in 4 year old French oak foudre. The finest parcels from each variety were selected and blended in foudre before bottling. Bottled November 2023.
vintage notes

The 2022 growing season followed very similar conditions to 2021, though slightly cooler. There were favourable winter rains and a mild flowering and fruit set period. The cool ripening period took place between late January through to harvest in March. Yields were well balanced, and we were pleased with the fruit ripeness, intensity, freshness, and natural acidity.

Hickinbotham

The Hickinbotham vineyard is somewhat of a legend amongst the Australian winemaking community.

Planted in 1971 in the Clarendon region, fruit from this important site has contributed to some of the most iconic wines in Australia's history, including Penfold's Grange, Eileen Hardy and Clarendon Hills.

Recently, the vineyard has undergone somewhat of a renaissance after being purchased by American wine juggernaut, the Jackson family, and being placed into the winemaking care of Yangarra winemaker Peter Fraser and respected American winemaker, Chris Carpenter.

These are elite premium wines that are made limited quantities and are built to mature gracefully. The ultimate addition to any serious collector's cellar.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
