Description

Winemaker Chris Carpenter's inspiration for this single varietal release of Cabernet Franc is none other than the Bordeaux icon, Cheval Blanc.

Carpenter sees the depth and power of Bordeaux here, albeit through the silky McLaren Vale viel. It's a devastatingly smooth and seductive wine with perfectly ripe blackcurrant, boysenberry, violet and green leaf characters in spades.

Where so many modern Australian Cabernet Franc are built in the more youthful, energetic style reminiscent of the Loire Valley, this is a dead-serious cellaring option and arguably one of the most impressive examples of the variety ever produced in this country.

Buy it. Drink it. Savour it. Watch it unfurl over the coming decades. This is as good as Cabernet Franc gets in this country.

"Expressive take on cabernet franc... elegance and varietal clarity... refined structural drive."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Impossible to put down... bramble, cassis, salted licorice, star anise... seductive and supple."
- Shanteh Wale (Wine Pilot)

95 points - “A blend of 87/11/2% cabernet franc/merlot/malbec. From a block planted in ‘13; crushed fruit fermented with native yeast; 16 days on skins; 15 months’ maturation in French oak (60% new), then blended and matured in old oak for two months. This is an expressive take on cabernet franc, but as with all the wines in the ’22 range, elegance and varietal clarity are prized, with this clocking in at moderate alcohol and with refined structural drive.” - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - “87% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot and 2% Malbec, for all Aussie intents and purposes this is Hickinbothams Cabernet Franc bottling and it is handpicked, destemmed and whole berry sorted. 16 days on skins basket pressed matured in French oak barriques of which 60% was new for 15 months. Like a shiny new toy this is impossible to put down. Bramble, cassis and sandy potting soil, like the type used for succulents and cactus. There is an edge of salted licorice, handfuls of star anise and cardamom. Oak looks quite polished here and adds to the gleam and glamour of the wine. It’s seductive and supple with gathering waves of acidity that linger. A wine that’s pleasure is immediate and yet worth some time in the decanter to get to know it better, before you envelop it.” - Shanteh Wale (Wine Pilot)

93 points - “Plenty of class here. Crushed currants, paprika, spiced Damson plums and a touch of pimento. More medium-bodied and savory than previous vintages. The oak is a perfect framework. This is not as spectacular as this bottling has proven in the past. And yet the poise and drinkability cannot be disputed. Drink or hold. Screw cap.” - Ned Goodwin (jamessuckling.com)

93 points - “The 2022 Cabernet Franc The Nest is well composed, delivering fine-tuned aromas of blackcurrant and gravel with plummy richness and cedary oak sitting in unison. This is medium-bodied and savory, with earthy/gravel tones at its heart while a firm line of sinewy tannins keeps impressive focus over an extended, fine finish.” - Angus Hughson (Vinous)

90 points - “Very deep, rich red-purple colour, with a blackberry nose with traces of gumleaf and funk, big and bold and bolshie, with gritty tannin astringency on the lengthy finish, but it dips slightly in the centre and the line is uneven.” - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard covers a steep cut of country from the ridgetops above the village of Clarendon to the Onkaparinga River in the gorge below. Since its establishment in 1971, the Hickinbotham Vineyard has become a part of Australia’s wine heritage, supplying fruit to produce many of Australia’s greatest wines. Breathing new life into this historic vineyard, winemakers Chris Carpenter and Peter Fraser are forging a new era of Hickinbotham’s prestigious legacy: building upon and honouring the vineyard’s acclaimed pedigree.

Handpicked, 20% whole bunch, 30% destemmed and berry sorted and 50% crushed to open top fermenters. A gentle maceration principle of wetting the cap and only draining and returning when reductive. Approximately 20 days on skins. No pressings used and drained directly to barrel. Kept on lees in 30% new French oak puncheons, with remaining volume in 1-to-2-year old puncheons for 7 months. Racked and blended. Further matured in older French and Austrian oak 25hL foudre for 12 months. Bottled December 2023.
vintage notes

The 2022 growing season followed very similar conditions to 2021, though slightly cooler. There were favourable winter rains and a mild flowering and fruit set period. The cool ripening period took place between late January through to harvest in March. Yields were well balanced, and we were pleased with the fruit ripeness, intensity, freshness, and natural acidity.

Hickinbotham

The Hickinbotham vineyard is somewhat of a legend amongst the Australian winemaking community.

Planted in 1971 in the Clarendon region, fruit from this important site has contributed to some of the most iconic wines in Australia's history, including Penfold's Grange, Eileen Hardy and Clarendon Hills.

Recently, the vineyard has undergone somewhat of a renaissance after being purchased by American wine juggernaut, the Jackson family, and being placed into the winemaking care of Yangarra winemaker Peter Fraser and respected American winemaker, Chris Carpenter.

These are elite premium wines that are made limited quantities and are built to mature gracefully. The ultimate addition to any serious collector's cellar.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
