Description

Named in honour of Stephen Henschke’s father - a pioneer who championed single-vineyard wines long before it was fashionable - this Cabernet is the definitive expression of the family's Eden Valley estate. Cyril planted these vines on a north-facing slope in the late 1960s, and today they are managed with strict organic and biodynamic practices. In a region world-famous for Shiraz, this wine proves that high-altitude Cabernet can reach the same heights of pedigree and poise.

The 2022 vintage was one of the greats, characterised by a cool, slow growing season and a late harvest. This hang time is evident in the wine’s brilliant aromatic detail. It’s an enchanting red, lead by purple florals, wild herbs, and a core of blackberry, plum, and cherry. There’s a distinct earthy undertone that grounds the fruit, providing a sense of place that only old vines can deliver.

The tannins are remarkably fine-grained, weaving through the dark fruit to create a framework that is both elegant and authoritative. The 2022 is a beauty that is drinking well now but possesses the balance to evolve for twenty years or more.

"There is a very strong case that this might be the best Cyril yet released... It is probably the most precisely focused of any Cyril to date, leading to its poise and defined, detailed finish. Surprisingly, in some ways, it gets just a 5% smidgeon of new oak with the remainder seasoned. So you are getting a clear window into the vineyard and the vintage influence."

"No problem tucking this away in the cellar for an extended period."

"The cooler vintage that was 2022 has birthed a tranche of wines of great delicacy and "fluffiness"/freshness. They are wonderful wines—I like the vintage so much."

"This is yet another wine from the Henschke stable that forbids you to pigeonhole the Eden Valley, as this wine places itself firmly in the pantheon of Australian Cabernet."

"I love how distinctly this wine tastes of cabernet... There’s ample depth on offer here, and the structure to go with it, but there’s also freshness and energy. It’s terrifically good."

97 points - "There is a very strong case that this might be the best Cyril yet released. It was first produced as a single vineyard wine back in 1978 from vines planted in 1969. From the 1990s, it’s been coming from Stephen and Prue’s vineyard planted in 1988. In many ways, this marks a slightly different direction for the Cyril, although the essential D stylistic varietal expression remains strong. It’s a firm and slightly tighter wine of terrific linear structure with a bright, lively acidity, which in this vintage is particularly evident. The thread of blackcurrant fruit merges with a slightly dried herb and sage-like character. It is probably the most precisely focused of any Cyril to date, leading to its poise and defined, detailed finish. Surprisingly, in some ways, it gets just a 5% smidgeon of new oak with the remainder seasoned. So you are getting a clear window into the vineyard and the vintage influence." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

96 points - "100% cabernet sauvignon matured in French oak hogsheads (5% new) for 20 months. Lifted blackberry, black cherry and blackcurrant fruits with hints of olive tapenade, cedar, crushed herbs, bay leaf, violets and crushed rocks. Harmonious and silky in its travel with a core of ripe fruit layered with spice and herbs, fine, sandy tannins and a finish that draws out beautifully. No problem tucking this away in the cellar for an extended period." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Deep, bright red with a tinge of purple; intense briary brambly cabernet aromas, cassis and mulberry underlying.Good intensity and brightness on palate, fresh and lively, with good acidity which lifts and carries it. Very bright, medium bodied and elegant. Tannins are firm and dry on the finish." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

95 points - "The 2022 Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon leads with spicy red fruit, dusty baking spices and layers of dried herbs, akin to bay leaf and oregano. The tannins here are profuse yet very fine. It feels leafy and earthy, medium-bodied and fresh. I appreciate the varietal definition and delicacy here. The cooler vintage that was 2022 has birthed a tranche of wines of great delicacy and "fluffiness"/freshness. They are wonderful wines—I like the vintage so much." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

95 points - "From a single vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon on Henschke’s Eden Valley property — farmed organically and biodynamically — and aged twenty months in French oak hogsheads (5% new, 95% seasoned) before bottling. Cassis, plum, bay leaf and flickers of gravel and graphite on the nose, with air unlocking earthy tones and glimmers of eucalyptus. The palate shows elegance and power — blackcurrant, bay leaf, a mintiness woven through the acidity — with lovely integrated tannin structure drawing to a long finish. This is yet another wine from the Henschke stable that forbids you to pigeonhole the Eden Valley, as this wine places itself firmly in the pantheon of Australian Cabernet." - Tom Kilne (Wine Pilot)

95+ points - "I love how distinctly this wine tastes of cabernet. It’s fresh and boysenberried with redcurrant, blackcurrant, bay leaf, mint and tobacco notes running enthusiastically throughout. It feels ultra young, almost nervy, and includes a green-olive-soaked-in-tonic-water kind of character – I’m tempted to use the word minerally – though it’s all sluiced with cleansing acidity and long, firm-but-silken tannin. There’s ample depth on offer here, and the structure to go with it, but there’s also freshness and energy. It’s terrifically good." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
