Description

If you think Tasmanian Shiraz is all about cool-climate restraint, Ricky Evans is here to show you it can still bring the power. Sourced from a small north-facing vineyard in the Coal River Valley, this is a dense, structured expression of the variety, full of spice, dark fruit, and fine, grippy tannins.

The fruit was handpicked, mostly destemmed, and fermented wild, with a portion of whole bunches to add a little extra lift and complexity. It spent 14 months in seasoned French oak before bottling, with no fining or filtration - just pure, expressive Tasmanian Shiraz.

Expect dark cherry, black pepper, dried herbs, and a little earthy, smoky depth that keeps things interesting. There’s some serious backbone and length, making it just as enjoyable now as it will be in a few years’ time.

"I’m loving Tasmanian Shiraz. It’s been a revelation for me, and this one certainly floats my boat. Ricky Evans sources this Shiraz from Waterton Hall in the Tamar Valley. It’s all plum and blue fruits; full of crunch and verve with gentle exotic spice, dried meats, dried citrus rind, wildflowers, white pepper, and amaro herbs. Spacious, sapid, and febrile, it’s a great ride with a really juicy, fine exit."

91 points - “Pungent notes of campfire and smoked meats on the nose. The palate fights back with a vibrant and juicy core of red berries, mulch, and smoky flavours. The fruit is bold enough to withstand the winemaker’s work, as it finishes with crunchy fruit accents.” - Gabrielle Poy (The Real Review)

Though better known for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling, Tasmania is home to some stellar parcels of Shiraz. Winemaker Ricky Evans has secured a parcel of what he considers one of the best, from Waterton Hall Vineyard on the banks of the Tamar River in Rowella. “We were super lucky to be offered some fruit from this vineyard,” he told us. “I couldn’t help myself.”

Although this is from a definitively cool climate, Ricky finds white pepper and blue fruit notes in abundance and hence labels the wine Shiraz. The fruit ferments as whole berries, and Ricky takes a gentle Pinot-like approach to extraction. The wine matured in large 2000-litre foudres for 12 months before being bottled without fining or filtration.

Woodlawn Tasmania

Woodlawn Tasmania is the umbrella under which Ricky Evans' three wine labels coalesce.

His three labels include the regional Two Tonne Tasmania series of Tamar Valley Riesling, Chardonnay and sub-regional Pinot Noirs, the experimental series of wines under the Havilah label made for his wine bar in Launceston of the same name and his Single Vineyard range of exceptional premium wines from his beloved Tamar Valley vineyards farmed by Ricky himself.

Evans is one of Tasmania's most dynamic winemakers. Over his time since serendipitously starting the Two Tonne Tasmania label in 2013, Ricky's approach to both farming grapes and making wine has matured dramatically. The young gun is now an established player in the upper echelon of the island and is set to be one of Tasmania's most influential voices in wine for many years to come.
