96 points & Top 100 Australian Wines of 2023
“A supremely sophisticated wine that takes patience to unravel.”
- Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

The iconic Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier is a wine of controlled power and grace.

This elegant Cote-Rotie-inspired red is an Australian benchmark and one of the most collectable wines in the country. It's a supple wine filled with spice, fine tannins and gorgeously mouth-filling flavours. Refined, regal, impeccably polished. It's a wine that has redefined the Australian Shiraz paradigm since its inception.

If you've loved Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier in the past, you'll be smitten with this 2022 release. The quality of this wine is undeniable. It's a great wine at full stride with some of the most incredible reviews in its long, illustrious history.

It's a wine for Australia to be proud of.

"A towering monument to shiraz viognier. A benchmark. A revelation."
- 98 pts, Tyson Stelzer

"The 2022 Shiraz Viognier is sensational... This is one of my favorite Australian Shirazes."
- 97+ pts, Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

"Seamless, harmonious wine with a lingering farewell. A wine of purity and unalloyed beauty."
- 97 pts, Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

The Shiraz Viognier is our flagship, a careful selection of the best of the Shiraz Viognier parcels we craft from our Murrumbateman vineyard.

2022 was a cool vintage with gentle ripening progressing well into autumn. The cool season and longer ripening period have highlighted the intensity and quality of the spice elements in the wine.

It is beautifully fragrant in classic Clonakilla style, with serious but fine tannins ensuring longevity in the cellar.

98 points - "There is at once a distinguished calm on display here that sings to the anthem of an effortless, extended, cool ripening season, and at the same time a rising crescendo of flamboyant spice, white pepper, pot pourri and florals. Monumental gravitas is declared in granitic tannins of super-fine texture, enlivened by the fantastic tension of cool-season acidity, together promising a lifespan at the outer realms of Clonakilla potential. A towering monument to shiraz viognier.A benchmark. A revelation." - Tyson Stelzer

97+ points - "The 2022 Shiraz Viognier is sensational, but that assessment isn't breaking any ground. It includes 5% Viognier co-fermented and had 20% to 35% whole bunches in the ferment. Lacy, ethereal and structural, this is equal part Boscobel rose (which, to me, smells of raspberry leaf tea and rose essence) and roasted meat juices. It is sweet and savory, spicy and svelte and peppered by layers of pastrami and roast beetroot. There are notes of earth, licorice, black tea, jasmine flowers in summer and lashings of dried exotic spices. This is affirming and good, so good. Drink it now for Pinot-esque pleasure or in 15-20 years for elegant, meaty, ethereal, fresh, complex, layered excitement. All good either way. This is one of my favorite Australian Shirazes." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

97 points - "The new-release 2022 is one of the finest over the 30-year period. From a cool vintage in a cool region this is intense, spicy, beautifully balanced at just 13% alcohol. Complex, pretty and completely satisfying. Think a professional dancer: core strength but lightness of foot. $120 - and worth it. Perhaps a Father's Day gift." - Windsor Dobbin

97 points - "Medium depth red-purple colour with a complex and lifted floral/pepper/mixed spice, graphite and violet bouquet, a trace of blueberry too, the palate intense and medium bodied, with ample fine-grained tannins and appealing balance. Seamless, harmonious wine with a lingering farewell. A wine of purity and unalloyed beauty." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points & Top 100 Australian Wines of 2023
“A cool, attenuated vintage that seems to possess the prerequisites for prodigious grace and long-term aging: extract, freshness and guile. All of this without an ounce of heaviness, such is the gentle mid-weighted timbre of this beautiful expression. For those seeking Barossa or Brunello, look elsewhere! But for those who seek poise, detail and mellifluous drinkability with a balletic gait, this gorgeous wine's patina of Sichuan pepper, clove, red fruits, violet, iodine and dried porcini delivers on all fronts. A supremely sophisticated wine that takes patience to unravel. Drinkable now, but best after 2027. Screw cap.” - Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

95+ points - "It’s a compact and fresh-feeling release, gossamer threads drawn in a complex tapestry. Perfume is pretty, rose petals, violet this year, red cherry, fresh and sour, woody spices in clove and cinnamon, a touch of alpine herb. The palate is lacy, light on and quite transparent, a touch diffuse at present, but draws on its sheath of feathery tannin to tighten nicely, let’s say fine structure, while cooler red fruit flavours, woody and smoky spices lend character gently, but with potential on show. Right now, pianissimo as they say, but wait for the crescendo to come." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Way too early to be drinking this, but I just had to check out one bottle. Mouth-filling plushness, with pepper and spices and dark fruit. Classic. Now the other bottles go away for 5-10 years.

    Brilliant! Enough said.

Almost impossible to not love this! The iconic Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier, every sip was delightful. I had the 2010 vintage for the first time, brilliant. 2017 is just as equally amazing. Drink now or keep, the pleasure is yours.

Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier

"When we had our big celebration last year to mark 50 years of Clonakilla, we arranged the Shiraz Viognier tasting into three brackets: ‘Luminous’ (the cool years), ‘Ethereal’ (moderate years) and ‘Glow’ (warm years).

One thing the tasting demonstrated was that the vineyard signature remains strong regardless of vintage weather patterns. In fact, the cool vintages, (‘luminous’ because every warming ray of light is received with gratitude), reflected the essential character of our site in a marvellously transparent way.

The 2022 Shiraz Viognier is an archetypal example of a luminous vintage. As you will see from the reviews, there is something pure and strikingly beautiful to be found in this wine that took a long and determined journey to ripeness through the cool, moist late summer and autumn of 2022. It is a celebration of everything that makes this site unique and (we think) rather special."

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
