Description

Burn Cottage is one of the top names in Central Otago. It was the first estate in the region to be established from scratch with biodynamic principles, and is now rightfully considered one of the benchmarks of the region. While the "Home" vineyard in Cromwell is known for power, the Sauvage Vineyard in Bannockburn is where things get a bit more wild and aromatic.

The 2022 is a beautiful follow-up to the cooler '21. The Sauvage site sits on a gentle slope under hills cloaked in wild thyme and rosehip, and you can really find those herbal notes in the glass. Claire Mulholland and the team have handled this gently - fermented with native yeasts and aged in mostly seasoned French oak - to make sure the unique "sandy soil" thumbprint isn't masked by wood.

It’s a vibrant, detailed Pinot that starts with bright red cherry and floral lift before shifting into darker plum, blackberry, and a savoury hit of tapenade. The tannins are silky and lacy, but there’s a distinct mineral focus and a touch of white pepper that keeps it grounded. It’s plush and supple enough to drink right now, but it has the bones to evolve beautifully if you can keep your hands off it for a few years.

“This has loads of everything, including length of flavor. This is a bigger wine than last year’s offering, which will please many. I love single-vineyard wines, the lens through which we can view the year that made them and the strength of the site, above all.”
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

“All the elements are there for long-term evolution as the structure melts into the wine to reveal its perfumed complexity.”
- Stephen Wong MW (The Real Review)

95 points - “The 2022 Sauvage Vineyard Pinot Noir is darker in the glass compared to the Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir of the same vintage. Here, the nose leads with dried herbs and cranberry, black cherry, pomegranate molasses, dark chocolate and raspberry notes. There’s also nori, sweet tobacco and sage. In the mouth, the wine is ripe and plush with chewy tannins and a substantive, fulsome sort of impact. This has loads of everything, including length of flavor. This is a bigger wine than last year’s offering, which will please many. I love single-vineyard wines, the lens through which we can view the year that made them and the strength of the site, above all. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.” - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

95 points - “Detailed and elegant pinot noir, no more than medium-bodied but intensely perfumed and long on the palate with lingering notes of violet, purple plum, blackberry bush and wild thyme. There is a muscularity to the structure with crunchy acidity and fairly sinewy tannins wound around the fragrant core, along with just enough wood to notice on the finish. This is still in the process of coming together but all the elements are there for long-term evolution as the structure melts into the wine to reveal its perfumed complexity.” - Stephen Wong MW (The Real Review)

95+ points - "Sourced from the 5.8ha Sauvage Vineyard on the North East side of Felton Road in Bannockburn. It’s a wonderfully expressive pinot noir showing characters of pure dark plum, black cherry and raspberry fruit tones with a flash of wild strawberry. Layered with exotic spice, crushed herbs, meadow flowers, dried cranberry, thyme, pomegranate, olive tapenade and subtle dried game meats. Flavoursome and complex with a composed stony travel across the palate with some nice mineral crunch to the acidity. There’s so much to like here." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

This is our single-vineyard selection from the Sauvage Vineyard in Bannockburn. The vineyard itself is
located under hills once prized for gold in this region, now cloaked in wild thyme and rosehip. The land
below is widely sought after for Pinot Noir, and the foothills are now framed with vines.
Bright red fruits and floral notes evolve into darker plum, blackberry, tapenade and a touch of pepper.
There is a richness to the palate, with supple texture, integrated oak and a fine balance. Vibrant and
delicious now, the layers of interest, mineral focus and silky tannins will also be wonderful to enjoy with
cellaring. – Claire Mulholland, Burn Cottage

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
