Description

Moonlight Race brings together fruit from Burn Cottage’s own biodynamically farmed vineyard in Lowburn and another organic site in Bannockburn. The idea is to create a wine that captures a broad picture of Central Otago Pinot in a given season, while still staying true to the Burn Cottage approach – gentle handling, wild ferments and minimal intervention.

The 2022 vintage saw a mix of vineyard blocks and clones come together, with a portion of whole bunches in the ferment adding a savoury lift and fine, sinewy tannin. Ageing was in mostly older French oak, keeping the focus on fruit purity and the subtle spice that comes naturally from the vineyards.

It’s bright and inviting up front, but there’s depth too – a balance of supple red fruit, earthy complexity and a clean mineral thread. Made for drinking now but with enough structure to see it through a few more years in the cellar.

"I really like the crunchy character to this, with ripe, al dente pinot noir character highlighting the strawberry and lemon notes. Medium-bodied, lively and energetic with citrus and crushed stone undertones. This is so satisfying and fresh."

94 points - "The 2022 Moonlight Race Pinot Noir is supple and spicy, with pink peppercorn, cherry blossom, red apple skins, a hint of blond tobacco and white pepper. The wine is light in the glass (but vibrant) and the tannins suit it—they are totally fresh and fine—finely milled and like poudre. Superb, silky, totally satisfying and enlivening. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

94 points - "Smooth-textured, medium-bodied pinot noir with mouth-watering tannins and flavours that suggest dark cherry, rhubarb, grape stems and subtle spicy oak. Should develop well with bottle age." - Bob Campbell MW (The Real Review)

93 points - "Strawberries and cream, red cherry, a little dusting of pimento, white pepper and thyme. It’s medium-bodied, just, with bright red fruits and blood orange, a light dusty feel to tannin, a little sap and spice on a lively finish of excellent length. So at ease with itself and very good to drink. A lighter framed wine, and none the worse for that." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    A good pinot

A very good Pinot. Garnet colour. Sandalwood and cherry on the nose. Complex, forest floor and quite stemmy. Stood up very well with a roast duck with plum sauce. Just wish it has a little bit more fruit sweetness. Finish with light bitterness but quite long.

Moonlight Race is a combination of Pinot Noir sourced from our trio of estate vineyards: Burn Cottage Vineyard in Lowburn, and the Sauvage and Sappa Vineyards in Bannockburn. Each vineyard contributes unique characteristics to the blend, resulting in a vibrant expression of Central Otago Pinot Noir (bottled under screwcap).
