WINERY OF THE YEAR! - 2026 Halliday Wine Companion

Shiraz is a cornerstone at Brokenwood, and this Hunter Valley release shows just how good the style can be when it’s done with a light touch. The fruit comes from some of their best local vineyards, including younger vines at the famous Graveyard site, and 2022 turned out a beauty – cooler, wetter weather meant slower ripening and plenty of flavour.

In the winery things were kept nice and simple – small ferments, mostly French oak, and just enough time in barrel to round it out. The result is a medium-bodied red that’s bright with red fruit, a bit of spice, and that earthy savoury kick that makes Hunter Shiraz such a standout.

It’s smooth, fresh and seriously easy to drink, but still has enough structure to reward a few years in the cellar. Whether you’re pairing it with duck, veal or just opening a bottle midweek, this is Brokenwood doing what they do best – making smart, delicious Hunter Valley wine that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Many will remember this wine from years gone by, when it was a high quality quaffer and bargain buying. Someone made the decision to crank it up even further, though sadly and inevitably, the price followed. Now, it is a really first class Shiraz from the Hunter and worth every cent of the somewhat elevated tag. Serious stuff, here. The grapes are harvested from the younger sections of the Graveyard Vineyard, a fine pedigree if ever there was one. 100% French oak, of which 25% was puncheons and a total of 25% new. Vibrant purple, the nose gives us spices, cassis, raspberries, cranberries and a hint of aniseed that are fresh and delightfully exuberant. There are abundant tannins, but they are very fine ones. With impressive length, this is utterly delicious with spices and cherries on the palate. A ten year proposition and still great buying.

It is a signature wine for Brokenwood and a textbook example of how irresistible Hunter Valley shiraz can be. Made from grapes off the younger vines of the Graveyard vineyard and blended with declassified wine from the older vines. The wine is beautifully supple with red plum, crushed mulberries, and glorious licorice accents. It traverses the boundary between modern and classic and has so much sass that you'll find it impossible to resist.

Red licorice and plums, red cherries and sweet, earthen spices. It’s silken, it’s juicy and it’s well-shaped. It’s a medium-weight wine of impeccable balance; everything feels honed and well manicured. There’s a gentle creaminess to the texture and modest inputs from cedarwood oak. Archetypal “drink now or later” Hunter Valley shiraz.

Tasting Note
Lovely mid-depth colour with purple tints. Lifted red fruit and earthy notes on the nose. Ripe fruit and low oak impact on the palate, with the new oak providing a slight vanillin sweetness complementing the berry fruit. The ripe fruit tannins are balanced by natural fruit acidity, giving a very long finish. A typical medium-bodied Hunter Valley Shiraz from a very good year.

Vinification
Fermentation was part vinomatic and part open-top 2–4 tonne fermenters, with the latter plunged twice daily. After five days, the wine was pressed off and underwent malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. Maturation was in 100% French oak (25% puncheons, 25% new). Shiraz grapes were 100% sourced from Hunter Valley managed vineyards: Graveyard, Oakey Creek, Mistress Block, Verona, and Tallawanta.

Winemaker Comments
The season shared many similarities with 2021 but was of higher overall quality. La Niña once again created a cool, wet growing period, tempered by consistent breezes that kept the canopy dry and disease at bay. Pokolbin recorded its annual rainfall by the end of November, marking the wettest November on record. Total rainfall reached 956mm in 2021. Harvest was one of the latest in many years and was conducted under cool, cloudy skies.

Food Pairing
Veal, duck, and cheese.

Drink
Drinking well now but will improve with further bottle age.

Brokenwood

Brokenwood is one of the Hunter Valley’s great stories. What started back in 1970 as a weekend hobby for a couple of Sydney lawyers has grown into one of Australia’s most respected wineries, without ever losing that original sense of fun and adventure. From the beginning they set the standard for Hunter Semillon, a style they still lead the charge on today.

These days Chief Winemaker Stuart Hordern carries the torch, crafting brilliant Hunter classics and also drawing on fruit from some of the country’s best regions. Think plush McLaren Vale Shiraz, elegant Victorian Chardonnay, and powerful Beechworth Cabernet, all made with the same Brokenwood touch.

The Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz has long been one of Australia’s most collectable reds, but the wines across the range share a common thread: purity, balance and a real sense of place. At the same time, the team here has always kept things down-to-earth. They’re serious about sustainability and quality, but never take themselves too seriously.

Brokenwood has grown up, but it still carries the spark of those early days. If you want a producer that combines Hunter Valley history with a modern, generous spirit, you’ve found it.
