Description

This has been a popular recent addition to the Brash Higgins range. Following on from Brad's pursuit of freshness in Cabernet Franc, here he picks up the lesser-known Rhone variety Cinsault and runs a similar course.

There are few varietal Cinsaults in McLaren Vale where Shiraz and Grenache take the lion's share off attention for Rhone varieties, but with wines like this entering the fray, there may be a few more popping up before you know it.

It's fragrant, supple and smooth. In many respects, it's a perfect red for warmer weather that is begging for a chill.

Brad didn't make much so you'll need to be quick if you want to snap up some of this beauty for yourself.

"This has mojo. It’s lightish and fresh, sure, a little plushness, some riper forest berry fruits in the mix, but most of this is rose hip tea, cranberry and pomegranate juice and all the friskiness of spice, alpine herbs and anise. A delight! Geez, this drinks a treat, so bright, so fun, a quiet complexity, a cinch of generosity and sunshiney warmth amongst the more vibrant fruit, but sum of parts and we have a winner of a plush, soft, easy drinking red of great character."

91 points - " A variety that delivers grace and vibrancy in warm conditions, this leans into those proclivities, and perhaps more so given the cooler year. Cherries – red, black and sour – peppery spicing and raspberry-leaf tea across a wine that ticks under mid-weight, lacy, fine tannins and lively acidity upping the verve. Chill lightly for best effect." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

    Delicious

Absolutely delicious. Great slightly chilled too

Made from a block of Cinsault vines which we grafted to a former Semillon patch at neighbouring Lennon Vineyard in 2013. Vinted from hand selected fruit and placed in an open 2 ton fermenter for 2 weeks. Wild yeast did their job and then it all was gently basket pressed and sent to veteran French hogsheads for 7 months. 2022 in the Vale is considered an ideal vintage with healthy yields and a long even season, resulting in balanced wines with finesse, brightness and deep flavours. This is the sixth vintage of CINSAULT made at the Brash Higgins winery.

‘Ruby in hue, the nose is black cherry starburst with notes of blood orange zest, ginger, nutmeg and white pepper. The palate is medium bodied, deep cherry/red fruit notes, well-balanced and vibrant and the finish is clean and refreshing; laden with interweaving cherry, ginger and white pepper notes.’ – Brad Hickey, Vinitor, 23 July 2023.

Brash Higgins

Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking American-turned-honorary-Aussie, Brad Hickey.

In his former life, Hickey was one of America's top sommeliers, working for many years crafting some of New York's finest wine lists. He came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much loved Omensetter vineyard.

Hickey's wines are extremely expressive. They fall in two camps - the wines sourced from Omensetter vineyard and those sourced from friends around the Vale and the warm, dry Riverlands.
