Description

Aphelion winemaker Rob Mack sources his fruit from growers he knows and respects, with the fruit for this wine coming from the sandy soils of the Wait Vineyard in McLaren Vale's Blewitt Springs sub-region. Originally planted in the 1940s, the vineyard is dry-grown and produces small berries with intense structure.

With only a single 600L barrel produced, this is a great example of truly age-worthy, collectable Grenache from a winemaker who loves the grape. There's a little bit of ageing in neutral French oak, following a long and slow fermentation with 100% whole bunches.

"Wow. This is sensational... What an exciting wine—it's a wine I can appreciate and write about and observe, but ultimately, it's a wine I want to drink. Ripper. Highly/warmly/fervently recommended."
- 97 pts, Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

"Serious and structured, and really very impressive."
- 95+ pts, Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Deeply coloured with an intense purple hue. Savoury aromatics of turned earth, root vegetable, and dark cherry are subtle but have great depth. The palate is firm with a very savoury and slightly saline edge. Tannin is the most prominent of our three single vineyard wines, it comes in waves and carries the savoury edge of the wine across the palate with great length. The longest palate of the three, this wine will stand up to a rich food pairing and will benefit with time in the cellar.

95 Points - "Well, this is pretty exotic, with loads of spice, rosy perfume and Earl Grey tea, ripe cherry and raspberry. It’s firm and tannic, lots of dust and gravel in feel, crisp cranberry acidity though rich red fruit, ginger biscuits, and lavish pumice stone tannin on a finish of excellent length. Serious and structured, and really very impressive." - 95+ pts, Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 Points - "The belly dancer of the range. Exotic and frisky and gorgeous. This has a balletic feel to it. A thoroughbred, suggestive of Indian spices and carnal corners. Clove, bergamot, kirsch, cinnamon spice and a waft of optimism manifest in the most long-limbed reach of tannic bristle and maritime freshness that it draws a tear. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ned Goodwin MW (JamesSuckling.com)

97 points - "Wow. This is sensational. Saturated red fruit frames the experience given by this 2022 Wait Single Site Grenache from Blewitt Springs. Succulent. I want to repeat the word, but I won't. It has notes of raspberries, redcurrants, pomegranates and red licorice. The tannins are meaty/bloody and savory but oh so fine, and they balance the pure red fruit so nicely. What an exciting wine—it's a wine I can appreciate and write about and observe, but ultimately, it's a wine I want to drink. Ripper. Highly/warmly/fervently recommended. 14.1% alcohol, sealed under wax and natural cork." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

Aphelion

Aphelion was established by Rob Mack and Louise Rhodes with a clear vision. They had one thing on their mind, to craft: "Genuine, Authentic, Quality McLaren Vale Grenache."

A couple of vintages in and they are right on the money. They have close relationships with local growers in the Vale who provide them with excellent Grenache fruit and Rob's deft touch in the winery takes care of the rest.

The range is slowly growing, as is their family. Their investigation into their pet variety is deepening, as is their fan base. The small batches of wine that come out of the Aphelion stable should have a close eye kept on them, more often than not there's something exciting and great value in the bottle.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
