Description

Amisfield’s take on Sauvignon Blanc is a little different – fermented and aged in oak to bring texture and weight rather than punchy aromatics. The fruit comes from their Pisa vineyard, where stony soils and cool nights help keep everything tight and clean.

2022 was a calm, even season, so the fruit came in balanced and full of flavour. It was wild-fermented in old French barrels, then left on lees for a few months to add body and a savoury edge.

The wine is dry and layered, with citrus and stone fruit sitting alongside a gentle smoky note from the oak. There’s good drive through the finish, helped by fresh acidity and that signature Amisfield precision. A smart, surprisingly serious white that shows what Central Otago Sauvignon can do when it’s treated with a bit of respect.

The Real Review 93 Points

Tight aromas of oyster-shell, greengage plum and honeysuckle greet the nose on this remarkably young-tasting wine. Creamy oak notes start to assert themselves on the palate, adding some firm, drying grip to the core of long, concentrated yellow plum and oyster-shell. Some herbal austerity closes down on the finish. Give it another year and it should be ready for prime time.

Growing Season
A mild winter and spring provided ideal conditions for budburst and flowering through December. With no significant wind or frost events, vine health and growth were excellent, producing the strongest canopies seen in years. The season initially appeared warmer than average, suggesting an early harvest; however, a timely rainfall in early February brought conditions back in line with historical norms. During harvest, the weather remained extremely settled, offering an ideal picking window to bring in clean, high-quality fruit across the estate.

Vineyard
Sauvignon Blanc for the Fumé is grown on the lower terrace in gravelly Lochar soils. These demanding soils naturally restrict yields, producing smaller berries that deliver exceptional concentration and flavour intensity compared to fruit grown on the upper terrace.

Winemaking
Hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed, the juice was settled in tank for 24 hours before being transferred to French oak barrels (20% new). Fermentation proceeded with indigenous yeasts, followed by partial malolactic fermentation in spring. The wine then matured undisturbed in oak for 16 months before bottling.

Tasting Notes
Aromas of ripe peach skin and stone fruit are complemented by subtle nuances of slate, fennel, and white flowers. Barrel fermentation and extended aging contribute to a full-bodied texture and gentle smokiness, while vibrant natural acidity provides drive and balance. Harmonious, textural, and complex — a refined expression of Sauvignon Blanc.
