2021 Tim Smith Wines MGS

Barossa Valley, SA

Inspired by the styles of Southern Rhone, this blend of Mataro, Grenache and Shiraz from Tim Smith is one bold drop.

Excellent, kind of brooding, but still offering vigour and all in drinking pleasure.

About the Wine

Tim Smith is heavily influenced by the wine styles coming out of the Rhone Valley - unsurprising here with this blend - but he still likes to incorporate the Barossa style into everything he makes. He's a 'tinkerer', an experimenter, who loves to have a little fun with his winemaking.

The GSM blend is a popular one all over the globe, but it isn't too often that you find the M before the G. This one is Mataro/Mourvedre dominant, giving it a deep, bold broodiness.

It's definitely a cracker of a wine, full of energy, dark berries and spice. It'll also stand the test of time in the cellar, if you can resist the urge to drink it now.

About Tim Smith

Tim Smith loves the Barossa and he's not afraid to yell it from the rafters.

His range of Barossa and Eden classics are exemplary value and of very high quality. There is an honesty to the wines he makes and a charming rusticity across the whole range.

Tim has more than two decades of experience making wine in the Barossa and abroad and he has taken these influences from the Rhone Valley, Portugal, and NZ and infused those winemaking ideas with a classic Barossa regional style.

If you love classic Barossa wines delivered without pretension, you are going to get along with Tim just fine.

If you’re patient enough.

The Wine Front

"Exotic spice, blackberry, boysenberry, new leather, lavender, toasted almond. It’s fleshy and meaty, a little ripe raspberry in the mix, a panforte thing happening with that spice and dark chocolate, chewy tannin, crisp acidity, spicy and dark through a long finish. Excellent, kind of brooding, but still offering vigour and all in drinking pleasure." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Q Wine

"Many Barossa producers make a GSM, but not Tim Smith. His epic crush on Mataro ensures he twists the blend slightly to deliver an MGS. He hasn't missed the mark either. He rarely does. This is a brilliant wine for 30 bucks. Smith loves Mataro so much that he produced his first-ever Rosé from the variety last year. Up until last year, he said he'd never make a Rosé. Never say never. Don't bother chasing any either. It sold out in quick time. As ever, Smith's fingerprints are all over this MGS, as is his trademark thumb print on the front label. Meticulously handled with judicious thought behind the process, the fruit sings. Juicy Mataro is playful and joyous lassoing pretty Grenache to play an impressive support role. Some meatiness, fine ripples of chocolate, the raspberries and blackberry fruits are just plush. The Mataro and Grenache just waltz through the mouth leaving Shiraz the final word with delicate spices. Curiously, it's a 58/21/21 blend, I would have thought the Grenache percentage was much greater given how forward it is. Overall, this is a smashing blend. Just glorious. Barossa 2021 is a killer vintage and this exemplifies what is in store. Run, don't walk. Drink to five years." - Q Wine
