Description

This is a deviation from the usual company line from Peter Schell.

Schell made his name as a trailblazer for the 'New Barossa' style, a more 'European' slant on the traditional Barossa powerhouse. But a good winemaker is guided by the fruit, and this particular batch of fruit from an old Moppa vineyard was set decidedly to a more 'classic' Barossa tempo. Big, dark and brooding, Schell says it reminds him of the great classic wines of Penfolds and the like.

And so this separate bottling has come to be. It celebrates a single site that Schell has vinified since 2005. Enthusiasts of old-school Barossa Shiraz, this will be right in their wheelhouse.

A dark, broody and exotically spiced Barossa Valley Shiraz. Aromatically complex, high toned pepper, vermouth herbs, iodine, liquored cherry and blackberry fruits overlay delicate peat smoke, sandalwood, cinnamon, star anise spice and deeper wood ash and warm leather notes. Still very primary. Full yet compact palate, strong tart dark plum and blackberry fruits on attack turn to deeper and earthier cassis and plum fruit, black tea, brown woody spices and bitter chocolate. Fresh dark fruit acids and tight, fine, slatey tannins drive a fresh finish.

Hand harvested fruit was chilled overnight prior to partial destemming, placed in open stainless steel and oak fermenters (with around 30 % of bunch kept entire) for between 10 and 24 days. Fermentations were undertaken with indigenous yeasts and were matured on light lees until racking and blending 20 months after harvest. Components were matured in thick staved French oak puncheons, demi muids and barriques, with about 40% being new.

96 Points - "Very deep, concentrated purple-red colour that stains the glass. Concentrated and powerful to sniff and taste with impressive depth of dark fruits, tar, bitumen dried herbs and black pepper; the palate is full-bodied and powerful, dense and rich, fleshy and profound with enduring length. Blackberry and licorice, a riot of flavour: it's an exercise in power delivered with elegance. A very big and very young shiraz with a great future." - Huon Hook (The Real Review)

95 Points - "This is a serious Barossa shiraz. Serious colour, serious depth, serious flavour. It’s a plush wine, ripped with cedarwood and violet, blackberry and saturated plum flavours, with runs of dark chocolate and spearmint purring throughout. There’s a deceptive amount of tannin here too; deceptive because it’s so velvety, and so well integrated into the fruit. This is a bold wine. Big. Soft. Rich. And emphatic." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

96 Points - "Colour has never been a problem for Spinifex; here it's a super-saturated, magenta-edged crimson. Aromas of ripe blueberry, satsuma plum and boysenberry fruit notes. Hints of dark chocolate, brown spices, sandalwood, dark chocolate and citrus blossom. Plush and opulent with a mineral-laden line and melt-in-the-mouth tannins, it's a wine of great harmony and quality that paints a perfect picture of pristine northern Barossa fruit." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 Points - "The bouquet is a gloriously perfumed mix of all spice, pepper and licorice, the palate every bit as vibrant as the aromas and then some. It has the magical mix of intensity and light-footed elegance that is a calling card of Spinifex, the bottle empty before you realise it." - James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)

    Cracking Shiraz

Alluring aromas of blackberry, dark cherry, dark plum, black olive, licorice, bay leaf & spice, with a hint of vanillan oak. The palate brings through the dark fruits, in particular the blackberry, along with the licorice & spice, and now there's a subtle savoury undercurrent, & the vanillan oak lingers. It's rich & full bodied, with a good acid line & velvety soft tannins. Time will only improve it, but it's a cracking Shiraz right now.

Spinifex Wines

Spinifex are one of the 'New' Barossa's true pioneer producers. Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter's wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
