Description

The Pofadder, named after the venomous puff adder viper, is a beautiful rendition of Cinsault from Eben Sadie that is the opposite of what its name may suggest.

Sadie says that the vineyard this wine hails from is one that requires the most of his care and attention. It comes from a small parcel on the Kasteelberg Mountain, with the low-yielding vines there planted in 1973.

Bright and full of energy, this is a delicate red that explodes with wild red berries, minerality and fine tannins. Perfectly poised drinking from a master of artisanal winemaking.

In the 1920s Cinsault was the most-planted black grape in South Africa. However, as one of the fickler varieties to work with and to vinify, it suffered a fall from grace post-WWII. It's only very recently that (with growers such as Eben Sadie and Chris Alheit leading the charge) the ‘Pinot Noir of Swartland' has been reborn, and the results are revelatory. This is a variety that is now being planted more and more by some top growers in the south of France—wines like this show you why.

Roughly fifty percent whole bunches are placed in an old wooden, open-top fermenter, with one or two gentle foot-stomps each day to release just enough juice to keep the fermentation ticking over. After a month on skins, the grapes are then transferred to a tiny basket press and pressed directly to 28-year-old conical wooden casks for aging. The resulting wine, crafted from yields dipping below 28 hl/ha, is a gloriously textured yet vibrant wine, a delicate ode to both variety and region. In Eben's words: "The aromas are incredibly clean and bright and it is almost as if this layer of earth is sitting the very fresh strawberry fruit. This wine will undoubtedly benefit from aging, but it will be a struggle!"

95 Points - "Pofadder is a Kasteelberg Cinsault of great delicacy and precision, showing the freshness and poise that are the hallmarks of Eben Sadie's reds. This has a lovely combination of raspberry, redcurrant and pink grapefruit flavours, fine-grained tannins and understated wood." - Tim Atkin MW (South Africa Report 2022)

97 Points - "It has an open and expressive nose with wild strawberry and raspberry scents, light slatey aromas and touches of orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied and framed by finely chiselled tannins, beautifully poised, balletic even. Tender yet intense, you will not find a better Cinsault in South Africa." - Neal Martin (Vinous)

95 Points - "Proving that Cinsault can be world-class and age-worthy, the 2021 Old Vine Series Pofadder is deeper in color this year and has a focused core of crunchy red fruits and hints of roses with a lively mineral essence. Medium-bodied, the wine has an ethereal mouthfeel, fine mineral tension and an electric mid-palate that sashays with a seductive nature, revealing its complexities and secrets. With precision and finesse, the wine ends with lingering flavours of potpourri and wild raspberry. Bravo! I can't keep my hands off it." - Anthony Mueller (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
