Description

The MMAD Grenache is the first release from this new Shaw + Smith label, and it's sure to be popular.

Gaining access to a vineyard planted in 1939 is no easy feat, but thankfully MMAD has been able to create a wine that truly expresses the nuances possible from such old vines.

The first thing you notice is raspberries, like those little lollies you used to get at the milk bar. The nose then opens up to plum, strawberry and even a touch of meatiness and white pepper. The acidity and minerality are zippy and the palate is smooth and silky. A terrific wine.

Lovely mild ripening conditions produced Grenache of great intensity. There is a purity and a density, but also a lightness that belies the energy and power of the fruit. The aromatics are intense and perfumed with notes of raspberry coulis, cinnamon and a hint of fennel seed which unfurl in the glass. The grapes were mostly destemmed and fermented as whole berries in open concrete and stainless steel before ageing in used 500 litre puncheons.

95 Points - "Lifted, but subtle aromatics of raspberry, black plum and cured meat. Concentrated, elegant, fine and compact palate, especially for a grenache. Red berry reduction, gently spicy: white pepper, cardamom and fennel. Shows a satin-like, fine tannin weave and a long compressed mineral/red fruit finish. Treads the path of generosity versus savoury tension with aplomb." Paul Edwards (The West Australian)

95 Points - "Very bright, youthful translucent purple-red colour, with a complex and appealing fragrance that is spicy and layered, with raspberry, red-cherry fruit laced with dried-herb and spice notes that include clove and pepper. The palate is rich and elegant, medium to full bodied and gloriously supple in its texture. It's a young but quite sophisticated grenache: a superb drink already and surely has a bright future if cellared." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

95 Points - "Truly beautiful grenache. Sweet and ripe but savoury and, even, crunchy with it. Best of many worlds. Woodsmoke, herbs, raspberry, cloves and a sweet earth character. The presser mentions pomegranate and it's a good call; it beings that seed-like crunch to the wine. Tannin is ultra fine and the finish is noteworthy. Blewitt Springs is a great place to grow red wine grapes and here, again, it's off and away, in full voice." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

97 Points - "Its clarity matches its freshness; 10% whole bunches, 90% whole berry, 20 days in Italian-made tulip-shaped concrete 4-tonne fermenters, matured 15 months in old French puncheons. The highly fragrant blend of cherry and plum drives a long, fine, elegant palate." - James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)

MMAD

As if Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW of Shaw + Smith and Tolpuddle weren't busy enough already. Their newest venture has seen them team up with their chief winemaker Adam Wadewitz and wine industry professional David LeMire MW to create MMAD Vineyard, based in McLaren Vale.

MMAD Vineyard represents a union of expertise and passion in the wine industry. This partnership, rooted in the success of Shaw + Smith winery in the Adelaide Hills, expands to include other projects like Tolpuddle Vineyard in Tasmania.

Located in Blewitt Springs, the vineyard boasts fine Maslin sands and elevated terrain, granting its wines a distinctive aromatic character. Beneath the sand lies a layer of precious ironstone, contributing structure and complexity to the wines. The vineyard's old Grenache, Shiraz, and Chenin Blanc vines, some dating back to 1939, are a testament to its rich viticultural history.

MMAD is one of the 'must-watch' projects in McLaren Vale. With the combination of an exceptional site and the depth of talent behind it, it's sure to produce some of the region's most exciting wines over the coming years.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
