Description

The 2021 Mac Forbes Woori Yallock Ferguson Chardonnay is a standout Yarra Valley Chardonnay from the esteemed Woori Yallock vineyard, which has been under Mac’s careful guidance since 2012.

Planted in 1995 and owned by the Ferguson family, this south-facing vineyard benefits from relief from hot northerly winds, producing exceptional fruit every year. The 2021 vintage, with near-perfect conditions, allowed for slow, even ripening. Fermented with wild yeast in small old oak barrels and matured for 11 months, this Chardonnay saw no fining and sterile filtration, preserving its purity and character.

Mac's Woori Yallock Chardonnay is all about elegance and precision. On the nose, expect delicate aromas of peach skin, white florals, and a touch of nougat. The palate is framed by fresh orange rind, pulpy stone fruits, toasted almond, and crushed herbs. It has fine flesh on firm bones, with a bright mid-palate and a touch of white pepper leading to a long, textural finish. As always with Mac's white wines, it finishes with mouthwatering acidity and minerally, savory notes.

It’s a beautiful reflection of the Woori Yallock terroir and Mac Forbes’ unique winemaking. Enjoy this Chardonnay now, or let it develop in your cellar for 10-15 years.

95 points
"From a 1.36ha, south-facing vineyard in Woori Yallock that Mac Forbes has leased since 2012. Matured for 11 months in seasoned barriques. A bright gold with green tinges. Nutty and saline on the nose with aromas of yellow apples and pears. Gently textured and still tightly wound, this fills out and gains weight through the mid-palate before finishing saline and long. It's approachable now but will be even better in four to six years, if not longer."

"Pistacchio halva top note. It’s quite minerally, salty and savoury upfront, the first thing that hits the palate and the first thing you think of. And probably the last too. The fruit is in the background, Nashi pear, grapefruit, crunchy apple, white nectarine, green melon and a hint of papaya. Mouthwatering acidity, speaks elegance, lightness but power and fine talcum texture. Complete wine with balance and great length. It’s a pleasure."

95+ points - "Alluvial solis, low cordon… the vines are talking. In this wine, like in many Mac’s wines, the alcohol is on the lower end but the flavour is certainly dialled up. I do like that.

2021 FERGUSON
CHARDONNAY

At 1.36ha, the Ferguson vineyard in Woori Yallock has been leased by Mac Forbes Wines since 2012. The south facing aspect delivers relief to the vines from hot northerly winds.
This unique vineyard, planted in 1995, produces stunning fruit in both hot and cooler years and captures much of what we are seeking in terms of suitability of variety to site.

TASTING NOTES

Elegant and pretty on the nose with delicate peach skin, white florals and a touch of nougat. Silty structure draws you through to the back palate, framed by notes of fresh
orange rind, pulpy stone fruits, toasted almond and crushed herb. Fine flesh on firm bones, the mid palate is bright and lifted with pleasing oiliness and a touch of white
pepper that is carried to a long and textural finish. Still so youthful and primary, there is a big future ahead for this wine. We recommend decanting this wine prior to serving between 10-12Cº.

VINTAGE

A stunning vintage with near perfect conditions during flowering and fruit set. Good rainfall over winter built strong reserves of soil moisture, and the long cool growing season allowed for slow and evening ripening across key varieties. The 2021 vintage was one of the very rare years where we saw both quality and quantity of fruit.

Mac Forbes

If you love premium and artisanal Australian wine, Mac Forbes is a name you need to know. He’s not only one of the country’s most talented winemakers, but he’s one of the most influential spokesmen for promoting the concept of Australian ‘terroir’, believing that wine should represent a time and a place.

Mac specialises in single vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Cabernet from the Yarra Valley. His wines are delicate and finely etched, characterised by subtlety and grace.

His Pinot Noirs are fine-boned, the Chardonnays are adored by lovers of fruit purity rather than winemaking artifice, and his array of off-dry Rieslings from the Strathbogie Ranges are among the country's most interesting. Additionally, his ever-expanding range of experimental wines is a treasure trove for the curious drinker.
