Description

This is Kaesler’s top dog - made from some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the Barossa, planted back in 1893. It’s always a big wine, and the 2021 vintage is no exception, but there’s polish here too. It’s rich and concentrated, sure, but with the structure and detail to match.

The fruit’s hand-picked and handled with care - open ferments, basket pressing, and ageing in quality French oak. Every part of the process is geared towards letting those old vines do their thing. And they do.

In the glass, it’s full throttle - black fruit, spice, chocolate, a bit of liquorice, all rolled up in fine-grained tannin and serious length. It’s not subtle, but it’s not messy either. Just powerful, age-worthy Shiraz from one of the Barossa’s most iconic sites.

Drink it now if you want to see it flex, or cellar it for a decade-plus if you’ve got the patience. Either way, it’s a proper statement wine.

97 points - "Very old vines and a wine that is still very young. However, with time in the glass, it starts to shed its perfume gradually and gives detail one by one, layer by layer, showing the complexity that it carries. It’s not all quite merged yet, but time should do its job. First come the blue fruit, vanilla bean and braised meat. It has minty spice, liquorice, star anise, and tarragon family of aromas. The texture is this thick fabric of fruit that rolls out in a velvety manner in the mid-palate and tenses up on the sides. It keeps a long line of flavour, and sends iodine-bloody electric shock waves through your taste buds. Spice and perfumed cherry wood smoke flesh out in the back palate. Tannins are shaped in long slabs of graphite—shiny, smooth and fine to feel. It’s very much a moving and living wine that has a long life ahead. Funnily, the old bastard on the label doesn’t seem to age like the fine wine it has in the bottle." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

96 points - "I dragged a bottle of this wine over to New Zealand to drink with my father on his 70th birthday. He loved both the wine and the sentiment and the empty bottle still sits in his workshop. He's 87 now and still a magnificent old bastard, as is this wine. It's classic Barossa. Ancient vines planted 1893. It feels wise, like its parent vines have seen it all in their lifetimes, and I'm sure they have. Blackberry, black cherry and plum, layers of spice, pressed flowers, chocolate, earth, panforte and pan juices. It's full bodied but there's a loose-knit spaciousness to its form; all grace and latent power; tannins powdery fine and finish long and true. I love it." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Bold and complex aromas of blackberries, blood plums, mocha, mulberries and violets. The palate is full-bodied with a densely packed, creamy and generous mouthfeel, giving flavors of cured game meat, cassis, licorice and spices. Nicely constructed, with good tension and balance. Drink or hold." - JamesSuckling.com

95 points - "Dark, inky red and opaque in the glass. Heady and opulent aroma of mulberry, satsuma plum, dried herbs, pot-pourri, Asian spice, boysenberry, sweet oak and cola. Big, bold and concentrated in flavour. Lashings of brooding dark fruits, along with bitter chocolate, spice and a cranberry-like acid crunch. Big-time wine with balance and a long future ahead of it." - Aaron Brasher (The Wine Front)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
