Description

Jennifer and John Nagorcka planted the first vines for Hochkirch back in 1990. Now more than 3 decades on, theirs is one of the finest examples of the benefits of biodynamic viticulture in Victoria.

This Pinot Noir is the secondary fruit selection from their high-density plantings. For what might be called an 'entry-level' wine into the Hochkirch range, the quality is remarkable. Quiet intensity and deep earthy character set this wine apart from many other Victorian Pinot Noir. Oak plays only a very minor role in the show.

It's the perfect place to start if you want to get familiar with this exemplary West Victorian producer.

94 Points - "It’s all dark cherry and dried herbs here. Yum. Lush kind of feel with silty tannins and a cool, slightly minty finish, in a pleasing, amaro-like sense. Lots of character, lots of complexity, very savoury. There’s an elemental, savoury thing going on and it feels wholly unique too. Special. Top shelf for the ludicrous price too. It’s a beautiful, unadorned, generous and wispy pinot noir of ease of drinking yet enough detail to keep the pinotphiles very, very interested." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

90 Points - "Medium-full red with traces of black and purple in the rim, the bouquet strongly bunchy, with a chaffy note and a honeyed note. The tannins are ample and balanced, adding a little firmness to the finish. A complex stemmy style of pinot that has its appeals." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

93 Points - "Sweet-sour cherry-berry characters with spice, undergrowth, beetroot and hay flavours flowing seamlessly through. There's some volatility here but it works in the context of the wine's savoury, complex, meaty style. The nose on this wine is something; it has the kind of sordid complexity only pinot noir can generate. This is well composed, and will age well." - Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

    Convert the Pinot Heathens

I can see why this has outsold the Maximus at the online store from which I buy some of my wine. As may sometimes be the case, however, the public are wrong. The difference in price is about $10 South Pacific Peso's, so not enough to really be a factor. The difference in quality in my view is much more.

Taken on its own terms this is a very enjoyable, high-quality Pinot. There are deep, dark fruits here, some medicinal greenery, a little cinnamon and Bay leaf. The palate is similar, with good length and intensity. I think if this was Village level Burg you would be a happy camper.

This is great to drink whilst you save the Maximus for high feasts and holy days. A pretty good option if you wanted to show the neophyte why Pinot is great. Lay out a table in your Autumn-garden and convert them.

Floral, rich, full nose with a powerful and resonant aroma. The palate has attractive sweetness followed by fine tannins, great structure and a long and savoury finish. The wine combines fulness and density with precision and is quite stylish too. This is a super Biodynamic Pinot Noir with lovely lingering flavours on the finish.

Hochkirch

Jennifer and John Nagorcka are the owners and vignerons behind Hochkirch wines in Henty, Victoria.

The property had been in the Nagorcka family for three generations before the vines were first planted in 1990, and they've now expanded to 20 hectares planted to varieties that suit the cooler climate there - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.

An 'old world' approach to winemaking and viticulture underpins this unique Australian estate. The grapes are all grown using biodynamic principals, the winemaking employs minimal adjustments. Low and slow is the philosophy.
