About The Wine

Hunter vigneron Matt Burton must be a secret Riesling-lover, when he's not drinking Semillon. He's got a savoury Yarra version, and this super chalky expression from the Long Rail Gully vineyard near Canberra.

With a citrus zing to make you sing, this is a pretty good wine for a back garden karaoke session. Dry as the proverbial but with good fruit concentration that gives the mouthfeel depth and succulence.

Now what's a good song match? Something by Gundogs & Roses? Paradise Viti?

About Gundog Estate

Gundog Estate is owned and run by the Burton family, with son Matt in charge, and the cocker spaniel Karl Marx providing the inspiration for the label.

As well as their Hunter home, Matt sources fruit from the Hilltops and Canberra wine regions in New South Wales, making a tremendous value range of wines made from sustainably grown grapes.

Semillon is top dog, of course, and Matt makes both traditional and unconventional styles.

From The Producer

Despite the unrelenting pressures of a rain plagued season, the quality of Riesling grown at the Long Rail Gully vineyard remained stubbornly high. We only take the first 500 litres per ton of free-run juice, which we then fine and rack clean, prior to a cool fermentation with DV10. We find this process helps to deliver our targeted level of purity and precision, in combination with bright and focussed aromatics.

With an enticing array of floral and juicy lime aromas, the wine boasts an elegant palate, with great poise and freshness. Effortless minerality, balance, and persistence of flavour are the highlights, pointing to a long future. Cellar carefully over the next 5 to 10 years./p>

The Wine Front

"Tasting this alongside the Yarra Valley version and it’s similarly textural but chalkier and more driven by lime. It’s pristine and pure but it also feels a little wilder, more of a vibe thing than an actual flavour profile. Lemon sorbet and fennel with a long, drive, textural finish. Excellent, dry riesling." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"Welcome winter rainfall became a serious problem, with disease pressure through to harvest; taking only first 500L/t of free-run juice, fined and racked clean prior to a cool fermentation; 4.1g/L RS. Has a potent palate, partly built on the touch of residual sugar balanced by crisp acidity." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)
