Description

"At the crossroads of classicism and unpretentious cool, Landi and García have introduced a new audience – of both drinkers and collectors – to a finer side of Spanish wines."
- Ines Salpica (Decanter Magazine)

Hidden deep in the Gredos mountains, Tumba del Rey Moro is one of Comando G’s most fabled vineyards - an old, forgotten site brought back to life after years of neglect. At 1,100 metres on a steep, north-facing slope near Villanueva de Ávila, it’s planted with gnarly, own-rooted Garnacha vines in fractured quartz and granite. Getting fruit off this slope is a mission in itself, but what ends up in bottle is something seriously special.

The 2021 vintage was shaped by cold weather and a late harvest - perfect for preserving freshness and structure in a site that’s already pretty extreme. This wine is all about precision and restraint. Fermented with whole bunches, softly macerated for over two months, then raised in a single large foudre, it’s handled with care, not force. No adds, no tricks.

The result? A wine that feels like it was chipped out of rock - mineral, sinewy, quietly powerful. It has lift, length, and a kind of elegant tension that’s rare even by Comando G standards.

"Ethereal, scented, and precise with immense complexity—yet soft-spoken and quiet. Notes of wet stones, white pepper, tile, and mineral. Chalky tannins, lovely austerity, and elegant linearity from an ungrafted, north-facing vineyard. Super refined. Drink or hold."
- Zekun Shuai (James Suckling)

"Pale, delicate, and ethereal, this 2021 vintage is the most austere Tumba del Rey Moro yet. Mineral, floral, and subtly herbal, with incredible balance and freshness at 14% alcohol. A sharp, high-altitude Grenache with layered complexity and the energy of liquid granite. 1,712 bottles produced."
- Luis Gutiérrez (The Wine Advocate)

100 points - "So ethereal, scented and precise on the nose with huge complexity, but everything remains soft-spoken and quiet. Wet stones, white pepper, tile, and mineral. A little less round and loud than 2020, but this is super nuanced and refined, showing more linearity with chalky tannins. Lovely austerity here, completely stripped down. Ungrafted, north-facing vineyard. Drink or hold." - Zekun Shuai (James Suckling)

99 points - "The pale, delicate and ethereal 2021 Tumba del Rey Moro feels more austere than any other vintage of this single-vineyard wine. It comes from vines at 1,100 meters above sea level on granite soils in the village of Villanueva de Ávila and has a notable absence of fruit. Instead, it's mineral and floral, with subtle herbal notes ('piparra' peppers again!). It was harvested around the 12th of October, and by that time, the grapes had had a full development of aromas and flavors. The wine finished with 14% alcohol but with gobsmacking balance and freshness. The alcohol is not noticeable, a constant across the portfolio. The nose was shy at first and took time to develop, but when it did, it was layered and complex, with more Burgundian floral notes. The palate is super austere with lots of energy, reminiscent of liquid granite, with grip and light. It's a sharp vintage of Tumba del Rey Moro. 1,712 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2023." - Luis Gutiérrez (The Wine Advocate)

Tasting Comments
A high-altitude Grenache from the cold, north-facing slopes of Villanueva de Ávila, planted on ungrafted rootstocks. This wine is granular and nervy, marked by saline freshness, stonefruit, herbal aromas, and a deep liquid minerality. Underneath its delicacy lies a core of hidden energy and rustic charm, making it one of the most distinctive expressions of the Sierra de Gredos.

Comando G

High in the rugged Sierra de Gredos, just west of Madrid, Comando G is redefining Spanish Garnacha. Daniel Gómez Jiménez-Landi and Fernando García craft wines of purity, finesse and place - not power - using old vines rooted in decomposed granite up to 1,200 metres above sea level.

Their philosophy is radical in its simplicity: farm biodynamically, ferment whole bunch, age in neutral oak. No tricks, no heavy hands - just clarity, tension, and minerality. Think Garnacha with the precision of Pinot or Nebbiolo.

From cult bottlings like Las Umbrías and Rumbo al Norte to the broader village wines, their work has captured global attention without selling out. These aren’t polished show ponies - they’re soulful, site-driven expressions that vibrate with energy and authenticity.

But Comando G is more than a wine label. It’s a quiet revolution in the making. Every vine is hand-tended, dry-grown and treated with reverence. They’re not just restoring a grape - they’re reviving a landscape. This is mountain wine at its most profound: electric, transparent, and rooted in place. Comando G isn’t following the zeitgeist - they’re reshaping it, bottle by bottle.
