Description

Castagna's Genesis has been one of the quiet heavyweights of Australian Syrah for over two decades, and the 2021 comes from a standout Beechworth vintage. It's a cracking release.

Julian Castagna left a career in film to plant this vineyard in the granite hills outside Beechworth. It's farmed biodynamically, and the winemaking is about getting out of the way. Genesis is Syrah with a small splash of Viognier, the Côte-Rôtie model, and in a cooler, steady year like 2021 that gives the wine lift and perfume rather than extra weight.

Dark cherry, black olive, violets and dried herbs, with a stony, ironstone edge that feels very much of the site. It's not a blockbuster at 13.5%, but there's real depth. Fine, persistent tannins carry it, fresh acidity keeps it moving, and there's a savoury, spiced line right through to a long finish. Give it time in the glass. It keeps opening up.

Already showing some lovely complexity with a few years under its belt, it has the structure to go on for another decade or more. A serious, site-driven Syrah from one of Beechworth's great names, and in a top vintage.

97 points - "Bold and complex. You are entering into serious syrah territory, brought to you by one of Beechworth’s more celebrated vintages. Aromas of dark fruits, black berries, blue fruits and licorice come with a lifted spiciness that entices. A ripe amalgam of flavour resides here, where blueberries, dark spices and hints of oak and earth are invested in fine tannins and carried by a boldness of overall delivery. An enticing sour-cherry-influenced savouriness awaits on the palate. Beautifully constructed; this is a wine that should age effortlessly and with grace." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Concentration evident straight away on the nose; first sniff, it hits you. Nothing short of serious: orange peel and maraschino cherry, cloves and rosemary, juicy, structured and generous. Spice pinch and flavour punch, stony tannin, firm, slate-like texture. Long finish. Precision with a soul." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Deep shiraz colour, starting to develop some tawny in the edges; lots of earthy, broken rock, bayleaf and star anise on the nose; palate full of delightful fruit sweetness, the core swaddled in ripe, supple tannins. The wine has profited from its five years of age, building complexity and fleshy softness." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

The 2021 Genesis Syrah arrives as a cooler, quieter articulation of the variety — one that leans into restraint, detail, and a sense of place rather than overt power. The season has shaped a wine of composure and clarity, where nothing feels forced and everything seems to sit in its natural rhythm.

Aromatic lift opens on dark cherry and black olive, underpinned by a gentle ironstone edge that feels distinctly site-driven. There are layers of subtlety here — violet, dried herbs, and fine spice — all woven together with a savoury thread that runs deep and steady. It’s not a wine that announces itself loudly, but one that invites attention.

On the palate, it sits in a medium-bodied frame, defined by tannins that are fine, persistent, and quietly structural. They guide rather than dominate, giving shape without weight. A line of natural acidity moves through the wine with precision, holding everything in balance and lending energy to its progression across the palate.

There is a tautness here — something sinewed and alive — that speaks more to thoughtful farming and careful listening than to intervention. It feels grown rather than made, with an ease and integrity that reflects both the vineyard and the season.

Given time in the glass, the wine continues to open and shift, revealing further nuance and texture. It breathes rather than unfolds, evolving gently without losing its composure.

A Syrah of finesse and quiet authority, where place is the defining voice.

Castagna

Castagna helped establish Beechworth as a home for serious Australian wine, championing biodynamic farming, fragrant Syrah and Sangiovese along the way. Founded by Julian Castagna in the late 1990s, it remains a family operation, with son Adam now an integral part of the vineyard and winery.

The estate sits at around 500 metres in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, on decomposed granite over clay. Warm days ripen the fruit fully, while cool nights help retain the acidity that gives these wines their freshness and ability to age.

Certified organic and biodynamic, the vineyard is central to everything the family does. Vines are pruned by hand, yields are kept low and fruit is hand-picked, before fermentation with indigenous yeasts and patient maturation in the cellar.

Syrah and Sangiovese are particular strengths, combining concentrated fruit with perfume, savoury detail and fine tannins. These are the qualities we love about Castagna: distinctive Beechworth wines with plenty of flavour, satisfying texture and a proven capacity to develop in the cellar.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
