Deliciously approachable Cabernet, great both now or with years in the cellar. Ludicrous value.

Description

Best's claim that "If our Great Western region were somehow prohibited from growing Shiraz, it would probably be just as famous for its Cabernets."

Looking at the quality, value and potential longevity of their Great Western Cabernet Sauvignon, it's hard to argue with them.

This hits that magic Cabernet sweet spot between approachability and cellaring capacity, all wrapped up in an impressively elegant package.

For a Cabernet that's great either for right now or for a few years in the cellar, you'll struggle to find better value.

"Ultrafine tannin, perfectly ripened fruit, the line of acidity placed just so. Even the oak wraps smokily around the herb notes, as if to ensure that they don't appear too loud. "
- Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "If this wine auditioned for a role in the film adaptation of 'Remains of the Day' it would get the part in a heartbeat. It's just so exquisitely well mannered. Ultrafine tannin, perfectly ripened fruit, the line of acidity placed just so. Even the oak wraps smokily around the herb notes, as if to ensure that they don't appear too loud. This mid-weight cabernet would make the perfect butler to the finest of meals." - Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

92 points - "Deep ruby red colour. Blackberry, bramble, and bay leaf all fill the aromatic senses. Medium weight, graphite notes add contrast to the sweet berry fruit whilst a herbal layer fills towards the finish. Tannins are supple and very approachable, making this medium bodied red a real crowd pleaser" - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

91 points - "Pretty nose of dark plums, mulberries, violets and fresh blueberries. Medium-bodied and creamy, with powdery tannins and a youthful core of fresh fruit and flowers. Drink now or hold. Screw cap." - James Suckling

89+ points - "The 2021 Great Western Cabernet Sauvignon is leafy and vibrant on the nose, with aromas of pomegranate, raspberry, licorice, black pepper, anise and nori. In the mouth, the tannins create an angular shape around the fruit, which is, as the nose promised, silky. Overall, the palate feels firm and defined by its tannic presence rather than by bright fruit, but it certainly cuts a serious shape in the glass. It is smart and leafy/herbal, a class act for $25AUD. 14% alcohol, sealed under Stelvin." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

2020 Bests Great Western Cabernet Sauvignon

In keeping with the general quality of Best Western. Great quality wine for its value.

Supple but rich flavours of black fruits with soft acidity and
smooth lingering tannins..

This youthful wine is a great expression of the variety in Great Western. It is possible to enjoy this wine now with food, but it will soften and gain complexity over the next 5- 20 years. This wine tastes great with Wagyu beef meatballs in a rich sauce, and fresh pappardelle.

Best's Great Western

Best's Great Western is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the country.

Their iconic Nursery Block is home to some of the oldest clonal material for particular varieties that can be found anywhere in the world. Established in the late 1860s, this precious vineyard is envied by much of the wine growing world.

Their wines are consistently excellent: the Shiraz dark and powerful, the Rieslings full flavoured and impeccably balanced, and the rare releases of Old Vine Meunier and Thomson Family Shiraz are some of the most collectable red wines in the country.

The Thomson family, and the Best family before them, have given us one of the true treasures of the Australian wine scene.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
