Description

The Premium Pinot Noir sits right at the core of Bass Phillip – serious wine, but made without fuss. The 2021 vintage was the first crafted fully under Jean-Marie Fourrier and Adam Francis, who’ve kept the focus where it’s always been: careful farming, low yields and a light hand in the cellar.

It was a cool, drawn-out season in South Gippsland, perfect for building flavour slowly. The fruit was hand-picked, fermented wild in small open vats and aged in fine French oak. Nothing forced, just patient, detailed work.

In the glass it’s all red cherry, rose, spice and a bit of earthy grip. The texture is fine, the finish long and clean. It’s a little tighter and more focused than past vintages, showing the clarity and discipline that define this new era at Bass Phillip.

"My, my, what a wine with its depth and structure as much as its beauty and ethereal qualities."

96 points - "My, my, what a wine with its depth and structure as much as its beauty and ethereal qualities. While there are the usual dark cherries and heady aromas of baking spices, there’s very much a savoury edge to this. Fuller bodied with an abundance of richness and stately raw-silk tannins. This is complex, superbly balanced and built to last a long time. But gee, it's compelling now." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

    One the great Aussie Pinots

Its clear from the get go that this is a great Aussie Pinot. Its only bested but the Reserve.

Bunches are carefully sorted upon arrival at the winery
on a sorting table then conveyed to a ‘state of the art’
incline destemmer. The whole berries are gently
conveyed directly to open fermenters with an addition
of 40 ppm SO2. A natural ferment starts usually within
4 days but hand plunging commences from the start
until draining/pressing. Usually between 10-14 days
from harvest, the wine is drained, the skins pressed
gently and combined with the free run wine which is
settled for a week or so before racking to barrel using
gravity. Malo Lactic occurs naturally in barrel and once
complete the wine gets 60 ppm SO2. Our Premium
Pinot is a selection of only the very best barrels of which
38% were new this year. All barrels are light toasted and
extra tight grain oak. Barrels are topped and checked
regularly. Wine stays in barrel for 14 months, when it’s
simply gravity decanted off lees via a spigot inserted at
the bottom of the barrel to a blending tank. No fining of
any sort, or filtration before bottling in July 2022.

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.
