2020 Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown Halbinsel Pinot Gris SC

Mornington Peninsula, VIC

Top notch skin contact Pinot Gris from Mornington, a real departure for Tess and Jeremy from VS & B. Delicious amber wine.

About very vibrant feeling and thirst-quenching with a peppery finish. A great vibe, a great wine.

About The Wine

Tess and Jeremy's 'One-Off Series' really goes off-piste with this skin-contact Pinot Gris from Mornington Peninsula.

It's a light amber wine with lovely herbal, skinnsy fruit aromas. It's rich and sinewy on the palate with an olive oil texture, some bloody orange tang, and a savoury almost meaty note..

Very interesting wine that will evolve further if you allow it the opportunity...

About Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown

Tessa and Jeremy are playing a long-game with their Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown label.

They have invested in a block of land high in the hills behind Beechworth and have planted 10,000 vines on it over the last couple of years with the plan to farm it organically. Tessa has a wealth of experience from time at Sorrenberg and Kooyong, Jeremy is an architect by trade with an eye for detail.

It comes as no surprise that the buzz around this husband and wife team is palpable and the praise is high. Max Allen called them, “one of a remarkable number of impressive new wine labels to have cropped up in Beechworth over the last five years.”

They are going to be at the forefront of Beechworth wine for many years to come.

From The Producer

This is a 2020 skin fermented Pinot gris, from the McRae Mist vineyard in Tuerong on the Mornington Peninsula. We make skinsy gris very much similarly to Pinot noir: it’s destemmed whole berries fermented in flowerpot for around three weeks, before pressing to very old puncheons for maturation. We do however pick at white wine ripeness to conserve acidity. It’s on lees for ten months before a light sulfuring pre-bottling. This is one of our favourite wines from the emotionally challenging 2020 vintage: it’s fragrant and complex and is best served at about fourteen degrees.

Blend : Pinot Gris (100%)
ABV : 12.5%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2027

The Wine Front

'"Hello skin fermented pinot gris. A lot of relationships in industry were drawn on to eke out wine from the 2020 devastation for VS&B. Steve Faulkner (Oakridge viti) does the farm consulting for this Mornington vineyard and the wine is made like reds. VS&B rise and rise. Good for us. Good for them. Wrong bottle shot but it looks similar. Cherry juice freshness, cranberry tang, tea-like tannin, bite of bayleaf and an almost seaweed umami thing going on. Very refreshing, quietly complex, powdery tannin, so very vibrant feeling and thirst-quenching with a peppery finish. A great vibe, a great wine." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
