Description

This beautiful example of McLaren Vale Grenache comes from a rugged old bush vines planted in Blewitt Springs almost 50 years ago.

A delicate handling in the winery by winemaker Michael Corbett has perfectly preserved the ethereal quality that these old vines produce. The epic aromatics, the glorious texture, the vivaciousness of this wine is something to behold.

This is the quintessential modern McLaren Vale Grenache and just a stunning thing to drink and set to be one of the most sought-after Grenache releases in Australia this year.

The Grenache that produces this wine comes from an outstanding vineyard in Blewitt Springs. A hidden gem of sorts, the high 'Silver Sands' vineyard was planted by Robert Rende and his father Michael some 50+ years ago. The summer of 2020 was the third hot and dry vintage in succession. Small patches of rain during critical moments helped the vines remain vibrant, yet crops were just a little above 50% of long-term average (18HL/Ha). The final wine sees around 50% whole bunch, slightly less than the past couple of releases.

A three-year-old 2200 litre Slavonian oak foudre, plus two French oak puncheons housed the wine for about 14 months post press, before the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.

95 Points - "Vanguardist is all about Grenache, and I reckon, this is the best wine of the 2020 releases. Raised in big Slav oak, with a few puncheons taking up the rest.Dried roses, baking spices, raspberry and dried strawberry, with a smattering of dried herb. Medium-bodied, supple, red fruited, spicy and dusty feel, the etch-a-sketch of tannin here is really so lovely, maybe some sour cherry too, garrigue, and a stony feel, fresh but dry, with a pumice stone tannin 'mineral' feel on a long dry finish. A little more bony and subdued than the last couple of vintages, but none the worse for that in a way, just light and shade of vintage playing out, as is appropriate. Wonderful and individual expression of Grenache." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

97 Points - "Shows rich and complex aromas of raspberries, dark berries and plums with savory, earthy, terra cotta-like notes, pomegranate and blueberries. Very fresh and lively, the palate is detailed and powerful with taut, fine tannins a highlight. Drink over the next decade." - Nick Stock (JamesSuckling.com)

96 Points - "I have always appreciated the style here: a pinosity of red fruits with a firm yet svelte etching of nebbiolo-esque bristly tannins. Sometimes, though, the ripeness was on the south side of ideal. Not this year! This sits pretty on a dial between elegance and sappier fruit, still defined by signature fine-boned tannic latticework and saline freshness. Darker cherry, anise, mint, thyme, rosemary and sandalwood. A whiff of orange zest, too. This address is now at the top of the stylistic totem pole and one of the few true regional benchmarks." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

Customer Reviews

Vanguardist

Vanguardist is an up and coming producer from McLaren Vale started by three friends after many long nights in Hawkes Bay talking about their shared love of wine.

Their mission is to bring premium, authentic, small-batch wines to a market they see as crowded by "overly commercialised wines produced by corporates who take up all the elbow room."

They source very high-quality fruit from great vineyards across South Australia, looking to build wines with texture and vibrancy.

With experienced winemaker Michael Corbett at the helm, the future looks bright for this plucky challenger brand.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
