About The Wine

The 'Tiers Vineyard' is the oldest block of Chardonnay planted in the Adelaide Hills, established in 1979.

In 2003, Brian Crozer opted too replant a section of the vineyard to Burgundian Chardonnay clones. The vines spaced only 1.5m apart have yielded intense fruit from early in their life.

"This unique section of The Tiers Vineyard produces earlier ripening, fuller flavoured Chardonnay than the 1979 old vine," says Crozer. They yield a wine of high impact, full figure and razor-sharp acidity.

This is a powerful Chardonnay that commands attention.

About Tapanappa

Brian Croser is a legend in the Australian winemaking community. From his founding of Petaluma over 40 years ago, he helped put the Adelaide Hills on the map.

After ceding control of Petaluma in 2001, Brian founded Tapanappa, in partnership with the Bollinger, and Lynch Bages families, in order to continue with his vision, creating benchmark Australian wines.

His focus is on ensuring the right varieties are planted in the most suitable terroir for them, which is reflected in the name Tapanappa meaning ‘sticking to the path’ in the local indigenous language.

With three distinct vineyard sites across the Adelaide Hills, Wrattonbully and Fleurieu, Brian and his family produce elegant terroir driven wines.

From The Producer

2020 Tiers 1.5M Chardonnay stands alongside its older sibling, the 2020 Tiers Old Block, as an equal but with the subtle differences of its close spaced, French clone, earlier ripening habit. Both wines are truly outstanding vintage examples of the Tiers special terroir.

The Tiers 1.5M is slightly yellower than its older sibling. The aroma is more open and ripe, more of peach than nectarine and with some elderflower and custard sweetness. The flavour is intense and very fruit ripe and fresh. There is significant texture and fruit sweetness and exceptional length of flavour. The trade mark texture is offset by the acid and grapefruit finishing cut of the Tiers Vineyard.

The delayed ripening of a very small crop in perfect cool, dry and sunny conditions, has defined a very special Chardonnay from the unique and distinguished Tiers 1.5M Vineyard terroir. 2020 Tiers 1.5M Chardonnay is “a very special vintage of a unique wine defined by a truly distinguished vineyard terroir”.

The Wine Front

" A beautiful piece of wine machinery. Precision is everything here. That, and purity. Nectarine, lemon curd, flint, cream and cedar characters. It’s pure, focused and long; it’s scintillating. Drink this now and it’s spectacular but its best days remain ahead." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

The Real Review

"Light yellow colour. The nose is reductive, smoky matchstick, a kiss of oak too, in balance. Small flowers, quite lovely fruit-driven aromas. The palate is soft and round and refined, tapering a bit towards the back. The acid is a trifle firm, but the steeliness would help it go with food. Mouth-watering finish. It's young and will be even better next year." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy).
