2020 Sigalas Assyrtiko Santorini

Santorini, Greece

An expressive, zesty and rich Santorini Assyrtiko that will continue to develop

Bold wine, and full of flavour, though not lacking acidity and cut.

About the Wine

The Sigalas Assyrtiko Santorini is a wine that will truly make you feel like you're living it up on a Greek island. With its bright acidity and pronounced minerality, it evokes the sea and the terroir of Santorini with every sip. There are lovely flavours of citrus and stone fruit (particularly peach).

As the wine ages, it develops notes of honey and petrol (yes, in a good way), much like an aged Riesling. Naturally, as the wine is completely dry, it is a great choice to have with seafood, or any rich dishes with poultry or creamy sauces.

About Domaine Sigalas

Since its inception in 1991 (a venture between Paris Sigalas, Christos Markozane and Yiannis Toundas) Domaine Sigalas has strived to make some of Greece's most interesting and complex whites, with a natural focus on Assyrtiko.

Based in Oia, a quiet spot in the north of the stunning island of Santorini (part of the Cyclades island group), they now farm 19 hectares of vines in some unique volcanic soils. They are some of the oldest vineyards (not vines) in the world, with a heritage going back thousands of years.

Wine Advocate

"The 2020 Santorini Assyrtiko, the flagship 100% Assyrtiko, is unoaked, dry (1.9 grams of residual sugar, six grams of total acidity) and comes in at 15.1% alcohol, a notable spike. That has some pros and cons. This is not the zestiest Assyrtiko, but it sure is ripe and rich. It sits in the mouth, coating the palate and seeming very weighty. Yet it doesn't always seem expressive, at least not today. It also seems to hold the alcohol pretty well, and hopefully that will continue as this ages. So far, so good, in other words, but this will be interesting to watch as it evolves over the rest of the decade. They normally age well. Will this have the structure to do so? In terms of concentration, for that part of the deal it is just packed with fruit, even if the fruit seems a bit closed right now. Again, so far, so good, but other years might surpass it in terms of aging." Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The Wine Front

"Bold wine, and full of flavour, though not lacking acidity and cut. Chamomile, apricot, honey and mint, lemon/lime cordial. It’s big and lavish, honey lemon and spices, a little warmth from alcohol, a glycerol richness, lime butter and a fleshy pithy finish of good length. A lot of character, though maybe not the frission and edge that you’d expect from this grape variety. Still has chalkiness and some energy." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
