Description

Chris and Andrea Mullineux are pretty much the gold standard in the Swartland, and the Granite Syrah is the one that really shows off their finesse. It comes from 21-year-old bush vines on the Jakkalsfontein farm where the roots have to fight through solid decomposed granite to find water. That struggle is exactly what gives this wine its incredible tension and that stony, mineral backbone.

In the cellar, they don't mess about with the fruit's natural character. It is 100% whole-bunch fermented and crushed by foot, with just a bit of gentle hand-plunging to keep the extraction subtle. It spent a year in 500L barrels and another ten months in large foudres, which is the secret to getting those tannins so fine and polished without the oak taking over the conversation.

The real magic here is the "latent power" under the hood. It is not a big, bruising Shiraz; it is built on a massive amount of structure and high-toned energy. Because the canopy is a bit more shaded on this site, the wine keeps a cool, effortless feel that hides a serious amount of intensity. It is a world-class red that is more about precision and "old world" restraint than brute force.

On the nose, you get this beautiful hit of lavender, lilies, and sweet black pepper. The palate is where the structure really shows up - it is packed with red currant fruit and incredibly long, fine-grained tannins that just coat the mouth. It is a wine for the long haul, easily capable of 20 years in the cellar. If you are cracking it now, definitely give it a good decant to let that power unfold.

"A very classical and classy expression of Syrah. This is one for collectors and connoisseurs, drinkers who want to age their wines and then sip them slowly in lengthy contemplation. World class Syrah in every sense of the word."

97 points - "Same block has been bought for over 10 years from 21+ year old vines growing on deep sandy decomposed granite soils with a hint of clay. The aromatics reveal a lovely spicy, floral array with an expressive lavender lift intertwined with sweet black peppercorns, red currants, black cherries and a dusty dry straw and fynbos herbal complexity. On the palate, the incredibly powerful but very fine-grained, drying mineral tannins lend a real classicism to the wine’s mouthfeel and finish. The red and black berry fruits are subtle and restrained showing real precision, purity and focused finesse. While it is probably more of an illusion created by the tannins and the fresh acids, the lasting impression of the wine is its incredible minerality and old world restraint. The sour cherry picante finish just puts the final finishing touches to a very classical and classy expression of Syrah. This is one for collectors and connoisseurs, drinkers who want to age their wines and then sip them slowly in lengthy contemplation. World class Syrah in every sense of the word. Drink from 2024 to 2040+." - Greg Sherwood MW (Wine Magazine South Africa)

Variety: 100% Syrah

Bottling Date: 15th December 2020

Production: 5 513 bottles / 459 cases & 130 Magnums

Wine of Origin: Swartland

Vineyard Details:
The fruit for our 2020 GRANITE Syrah hails from bush vines planted in the decomposed Granitic soils of the Paardeberg and this wine has become our Single Terroir red most synonymous with gorgeous perfumed aromatics, freshness and length. These characteristics are mainly driven by each vine having to work intensely hard to get to the water source seated deep within the GRANITE structure.

Date Harvested:
The GRANITE Syrah was hand-harvested on 15 February 2020 with yields of five tons/ha, which translated to 28HL/ha.

Winemaking:
The grapes benefitted from the protection of a cool early morning picking and were put into 500L French oak open top fermenters whole-bunched. Once crushed by foot, the indigenous fermentation process started, and very gentle extraction was achieved by doing punch-downs by hand. To accentuate the refined tannin structure of its GRANITE terroir origin, the wine was given skin contact for 28 days before being gravitationally drained and then pressed back into the same vessels for malolactic fermentation and further maturation.

Maturation:
This wine was matured for 12 months in French oak 500L barrels of which 50% was new, followed by 10 months in 2000L Foudre. Once bottled, the wine was aged for another eight months before it was released.

Tasting Note:
The ripening season of this vineyard saw fair weather conditions, resulting in the naturally balanced fruit purity, chalky tannins and enhanced aromatics present in this wine. The shaded canopy of this deep-rooted GRANITE Syrah contributed to hints of white Lily and light spice on the nose, red berry compote on the palate and a stony minerality on the finish. The wine will age at least 25 years and decanting is recommended when this wine is opened young.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
