Description

Making Barbaresco had been a dream of the Massolino family for years - and in 2018 they finally found their own parcel that would stylistically sit well within their range.

This is a blend of three parcels in Neive: Albesani, Serraboella and Starderi. It's made in the traditional Barbaresco method - fermentation and maceration in oak before ageing in large Slavonian oak for 18 months and set down in a dark cellar to age in bottle just a little further.

Floral, alluring, finessed... it's a charming, character-filled wine with polished tannin, balanced acidity and pure Barbaresco flavours. Impeccable.

"An explosion of sweet floral and spice notes lifts the gorgeous, beautifully perfumed, vibrant finish. I love the classicism here."
- 94pts, Antonio Galloni (Vinous)

"So very good. Such fine bones and structure, with black tea in the mix too. Also, I really like tea, so that’s a bonus for me."
- 94+pts, Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

The 2020 Barbaresco is a blend of three parcels in Neive: Albesani, Serraboella and Starderi. Of these vineyards, Albesani is the best known and is covered in more detail below. Serraboella, which accounts for the lion’s share of the blend, is one of the most highly regarded sites in the eastern sector of Neive. Massolino’s vines lie on the preferred southwest-facing hill, on light soils, overlooking the village. Finally, Starderi lies on the western side of Neive. It’s a sunnier terroir that brings power and flesh to the blend.

The winemaking hardly differs from the Barolo wines. Fermentation is natural and takes place in large oak fermenters. The 2020 saw about 12-15 days on skins before aging in large, 5,000-litre Slavonian oak barrels for 18 months. A beautiful wine that for us is a big step up on the 2019. Pure class.

94+ points - "Albesani, Serraboella and Starderi. And if you’re going to make a Barbaresco from Neiva, then that’s something of a holy trinity. Strawberry, red cherry, pretty and floral, a layer of spice, sage, some almond and a distinct stony/earthy thing happening. Medium-bodied, red fruits, blood orange tang, stony tannin too, juicy and alive, with a ferrous finish of excellent length. So very good. Such fine bones and structure, with black tea in the mix too. Also, I really like tea, so that’s a bonus for me." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

94 points - "The 2020 Barbaresco is a terrific follow up to the 2019. A wine of nerve and grace, the 2020 sizzles with energy. Finely sculpted red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, crushed rocks and orange zest all grace this super-expressive, mid-weight Barbaresco. An explosion of sweet floral and spice notes lifts the gorgeous, beautifully perfumed, vibrant finish. I love the classicism here." - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)

    Massolino Barbaresco

A wonderful wine displaying aromas of soft lavender herbs and fresh red fruit lift.

Colour is lush red purple. The palate is a beautiful feminine and expressive mix of red and black fruits with hints of herb spice and orange zest. Ripe tannins close out a gorgeous wine with fine length.

Massolino

The Massolino family's history as winegrowers in Serralunga stretches back more than a century.

Founded in 1896 by Giovanni Massolino, the family's history is richly intertwined with that of the whole region. They now farm 23 hectares across prime real estate in the Serralunga sub-region, with premium holdings on the famed slopes of Margheria, Parafada and the legendary vineyard Vigna Rionda.

These are wines that, while classic, have continued to evolve over each generation in pursuit of the purest expression of the beloved Nebbiolo grape.

One of the great wine families of Piedmont and the wines are prized in the best cellars and restaurants in the world.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
